Like everyone else I've had a chance to look over quite a few blogposts of fellow realtors who are concerned about their respective market. When you're a real estate agent, of course you're going to be concerned about what is happening within your market. We take data, and study it until our eyes are crossed. We dissect the latest listings and the latest solds to determine whether the market is starting to head in the right direction. I know I've looked and reviewed more reports with my clients as well as in my private time than I care to think about!
In the end though, I have to ask myself? Why do I live in Bend, Oregon? I'd be lying if I said I haven't thought about living in Laguna Beach or Santa Barbara or maybe even Maui, Hawaii. But then I remember the beauty of my own little paradise, right here in Bend. I have 4 beautiful seasons here. I wake up nearly every morning and can watch the magnificence of the Cascade Mountain Range, and after 38 years I have never grown tired of gazing at them. I can go just a few miles and be in the midst of a thick forest...or go the opposite direction and contemplate the beauty of a wide open desert. A tranquil river runs right through the middle of my town and just a few miles away sit more mountain lakes then I will be able to visit in a lifetime. When I think about the incredible sunsets that I have observed that defy description with there purple, pink, orange and blue hues, I stand in awe of the magnificent portrait that nature paints all around me. I love the solitude of a crisp evening walk. I love looking above me to observe the myriads of stars that twinkle in the velvet blackness, and the sound of crickets and frogs who's songs, I believe, were given to us to calm the anxious heart. In winter when the snow falls, the quietness that stills the tension of modern life is almost palpable.
In the end, I think all of us need to simply contemplate the blessings the area in which we live provides. When we truly know and appreciate what that is, it isn't hard to express to our clients what makes our little place in this big world so special. Markets go up and they go down and there will always be data that tells us this and tells us that, but I've come to the conclusion that sharing with others the blessings of a given area is, in the end, what matters most. What makes your hometown special?
