I had an interesting call today while I was working in the office. I work for a builder/developer/broker so it was not unusual to get a call asking for the bosses help. I really think that Hurricane Katrina has brought out the absolute best AND the absolute worst in people. There have been so many volunteers that have come down here to help with the rebuilding for which we are eternally gratefull. There has also been a rise in shady contractors that just want to make a quick buck and take advantage of people who have already lost so much. That was the phone call today.
The woman that called wanted our help on finding information about someone who has done work for her and her neighbors. They are having problems with the quality of the work( the new roof is falling apart) and they can't get in touch with him now. She said that he seemed like a nice young man and even told them that he had a temporary license in Mississippi. Well, just so you are aware, that is a lie. There is no such thing as a temporary license in this state. She said that she was scared of this man because she is an older woman who is alone a lot. Please, please, plaese, check these people out before you hire them. If you have problems after they have been hired, please call the Katrina Fraud Hotline that was set up by Phil Bryant's office. We have got to protect ourselves because, unfortunately, some people don't think that we have been through enough pain. The thing that saddens me the most is that this woman never gave me her name because she is scared to death of him. What a shame.
