Often when folks are readying themselves to buy homes, one of their first acts of readiness is to obtain their all important credit score.  By law, consumer credit reporting companies, Experian, TransUnion, Equifax, are to provide you a free copy of your credit report, once a year, should you request it.

There is a toll-free number, mailing address, and a central website, which you can reach these the three companies mentioned above: http://www.annualcreditreport.com

It should also been known there are companies that claim to provide this free service.  However, there is also and high incidence of questionable practices surrounding some of them.  These include occurrences of hidden fees and requirements that you opt out to avoid being billed after an introductory period.  Many of these websites have the appearance of annualcreditreport.com and can easily mislead you.  It is also important to know that annualcreditreport.com will never send you e-mail, phone you, or will you get "pop-up" ads from their website at annualcreditreport.com

The Federal Trade Commission has a website, with more important information regarding credit reports.

Potential home-buyers, who wish ready themselves for the home buying experience, also need to become pre-qualified for financing, and credit score is an important factor in that process.

Myrl,  Have you tried contacting this website and used them?  Just curious what your experience is with them.

Robert - Actually, I had written the piece based on what another agent had reported.  However, because of your question, and because it had been more than a year since I had requested a report, I decided to try it for myself.

I went to annualcreditreport.com as the article suggests.  I completed the few questions, was asked whether I wanted the report completed by Equifax, or the 2 other companies.  I clicked Equifax, and was immediately asked whether I wanted a one-time report for $7.95, or to sign up for a more extended committment!

Aaaargh! So much for "free-reports" even via annualcreditreport.com - I'm disappointed!  I must admit I haven't checked the other 2 credit report agencies linked from that site!  But, I'm not really optimistic they will be any different!
