In 2007,  20,603 bloggers worldwide, including many Active Rain members, took part in Blog Action Day 2007. The subject was the environment.

I wrote, Mankind~Programmed to Self-destruct? , and although I'm not certain that my post had any great or lasting impact, I do know it was widely read and caused my readers to reflect on the state of the earth today.

It does not take much to initiate change; one person can and does make a difference. Never underestimate the power of you!

Active Rain has grown by leaps and bounds since then and I'm anticipating that our members will contribute greatly to the coming Blog Action Day 2008 which takes place on October 15th.

Again this year, I've made a commitment to writing a post for Blog Action Day. I'm hoping that each and every one of you will do so as well.
Together our voices are strong and we can make a difference.

Your blog may take any slant you choose as long as it covers some aspect of poverty in the world today.

When we think of poverty, we tend to think of those who are living in third world countries striving daily for enough food to keep themselves and their family alive for another day; however this is but one face of poverty peering out from our blue planet today.

Poverty has many faces and many of them you may see every day and not even be aware of.

In many developed countries, poverty abounds and remains unseen by the common man.

Painted in shades of despair and struggle, the many layers of poverty touch upon the lives of each and every one of us.

To sign your blog up for Blog Action Day 2008, visit the Blog Action Day Sign-up Page. There is no cost other than a bit of your creative juice and time.

I've formed an Active Rain group for this year's Blog Action Day posts called Blog Action Day 2008.
Please make sure and post your Blog Action Day posts or any posts relating to Blog Action Day 2008 to this group.

For more information on Blog Action Day 2008, visit the official website.

I encourage you to join the blogging voices of the world as we write about poverty on October 15th, 2008. Through awareness comes change, and you, the individual blogger, have a powerful tool for spreading awareness within your reach~ your blog.

Join us today!

Jo,

There is a lot more to poverty than 'lack of food'...poverty of mind and spirit are equally reprehensible, and need to be addressed wherever it is prevalent...! Thanks,   Fran

hi Joan,
I'm looking forward to reading you Blog Action Day post. Last year many of us didn't find out about it until fairly close to the day, and I guess many of us didn't find out about it at all.

It's a very worthwhile project and serves to effect change through awareness.

hi Kathy,

Thanks for stopping by with your insightful words.

.....so many in the world are without even the basics~food and shelter to  keep the body alive. There seems to be such a gross imbalance and yet the majority of us are at a loss for what we can do to make a difference.

Jo, I don't know if I'm going to be in the country, so I don't want to commit, if I can't do it.
(If I am, I will participate.)

I just wanted to say, though, that I give on a regular basis - as far as feeding the hungry.
I give to local charities, and I give across the world, through World Vision's "Fill a Stable" program.

You can buy a rooster, a chicken that lays eggs, which will feed the family, cows will work and provide milk, for example ... it helps so many more people, rather than giving to other 'poverty' causes, where some of the money goes to administration, instead of actually feeding the hungry.

https://gifts.worldvision.ca/Gifts/Forms/Category.aspx?name=animals

There are so many hungry and so few giving ... I'm sure what you're doing will be of huge help.
This is wonderful.  Thank you for bringing this to the forefront ... we need to be reminded of how lucky we are, and how we need to give back on a regular basis.

Thanks Sylvie!

It sounds like you do a great deal to help the poverty situation in the  world...thanks for the link! This is certainly a very good way to help a family in need.

Are you going to Portugal in October?

Jo, my parents have been threatening to come here for months now; but my house is being renovated, and as you know, when you start breaking things, all kinds of monsters come up; and it's going to take longer than we thought, so now they're threatening to disown me if I don't go there.

I would prefer to have them come here, but if it doesn't happen, I may have to go and convince them to come back with me. They have a 50th wedding anniversary coming up and we wanted to surprise them, so going there wouldn't work, because we can't all go ...  (sigh...)

So I hope I will be here to join your cause. :)

And I hope my $20,000 reno, which is now closer to $50,000 doesn't kill the plans for Portugal, or the wedding anniversary or anything else. :/

Sylvie,

It sounds like you're going to have a very busy fall season! I'll keep you in my thoughts that all goes well with the renos and the anniversary....it would be wonderful for your parents to come here in autumn, one of the most beautiful times of the year; plus, you'll have a freshly renovated home to host them in!

Carole,
I hope you will write a post about poverty from a feng shui perspective.....I believe there are many initiatives that can be undertaken to co-incide with Blog Action Day 2008 that will make a significant impact in improving the lives of many....it just takes creative and caring minds to make a commitment and go to work.

hi Kathy,

I agree with you completely. It would be good if grade schools offered some kind of Financial IQ courses that helped to teach children about money management and earning while they are still young....so few learn it at home (perhaps because many parents take this stuff for granted).

I'm afraid that we here in the developed countries have no real idea what it is like to live in abject poverty though....the third world nations abound with people just barely surviving day to day.

Sounds like a good cause and I will have to start writing today I think as I'm not so good at writing on the spot. I can write and write a lot, but for some weird reason when you tell me what I have to write about, I can't do it.

I remember your post from last year and I'm looking forward to reading the post you write this year also. As far as I know you can register as many blogs as you want for Blog Action Day.

I'm sorry to be replying to you on this after so many days gone by....I've been away most of this week and just now catching up on comments, etc.

I agree with you that progress is taking place in the world with regards to poverty and I hope we continue on the path.
