save the horsesYou see, I am married to an animal lover, who always wanted to be a veterinarian, is called the "snake whisperer" by our neighbors, and who saw a story in the local paper this morning about seven horses that were "rescued" but now may be euthanized after September 1st of this year.  She told me if it was ok with me she wanted to adopt one of the horses...

The dilemma:  I love animals as much as the next guy, but adopting a horse?  As I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and took the first sip of coffee, I told her that we could not possibly adopt a horse.  I did however feel bad for the horses AND wanted my wife to be happy so.....

family photoThe solution:  The power of small numbers and the idea that one (or maybe 4200) person(s) can make a difference! I told her I would run this by the 104,072 Active Rain members and see if we could find 4,200 of them that wanted to donate $1 to get these horses, or other animals like them, through to Christmas and perhaps increase their possibility of being adopted and extending their lives for years to come.  The cost to care for these horses is $200 per horse, per month, or $4,200 for the next three months.  They are currently being cared for by The Grace Foundation of Northern California.

Here is the full story at SacBee.com

Here is where you can go to donate $1 or more if you would like to help.  This is legit and is tax deductible.  I kicked it off with $10 of my own and encourage you to give a helping hand and go into the weekend on an up note!

If you are not in a position to help out these poor horses, please forward this to someone who is!

Regards,

Aaron Cullen - www.BrokersCorp.com

Aaron I am married to your wifes twin (I think) animal lover so I am in for 10 bucks also. Not that I didn't trust you but i checked this story out fellow Rainers and it's on the up and up. Good luck to the horses!

You are the man Darin!  With all the craziness in this world, its nice to pick a simple cause and make a little difference.  I just emailed the blog link to my wife, she will be very pleased...

Thanks!

Aaron,  I do understand about your wife.  Although my wife and I are both animal lovers and while we do not have the land for horses we have rescued 4 greyhounds.

Dear Arron,

I am glad you took my suggestion to ask our fellow AR members to donate to heart. I think the power of our AR members numbers will turn the tide for these horse. I too am in for $10. I only wish I had a bigger yard because I would take one or two if I could! My husband would probably complain because I already have two rescue Std. Schnauzers!! Thanks!

This is a huge problem.  Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention.  The ASPCA has noted the increasing demand on horse rescuers due to increasing feed prices and economic strains on owners.  There a great article on efforts to help these horses at the ASPCA website.

The horses and I thank you.

To those who have read this post and those who have donated a buck or two, great news...  Three of the horses were adopted!  As Laura noted above as did beth from The Grace Foundation of Northern California (animal shelter and resuce center), as the cost of caring for larger animals rises, their is an increase in abuse and the need for rescuing these animals.  Thanks to all who have read and/or passed this post along to those who care.

If you have an interest in adopting a horse or horses, or know someone who is, the Grace Foundation still has horses who need a good home.

Great idea. I have a 3 year old black lab I need to find a good home for. What's your address?

Erica, If you would crate up the dog and send it out, my wife/kids would take it in a heartbeat.  With that in mind, I could not possibly give you our address....  Our yellow-lab past away last year and we are now down to one dog that is 8 y/o.  With the 2 & 4 year old kids, one dog is about all we can handle at this point.  Thanks for the offer though!
