smiling finger facesRecently, I watched a segment of a TV interview about online profiles.  What arrested my attention was the discussion about the recognition that many people now prefer to have their lives segmented into different profiles and even totally different personalities which they share with friends as they deem appropriate.

For instance, there may be some things you'd prefer that your parents not see, but you are OK with friends seeing or vice versa.  The interview also explored different business avatars to reach alternate markets.  My impression from listening was that the profiles might be so unique that one might not connect the dots linking them to the same individual.

Just curious.  What are your thoughts about professionals doing this in the real estate industry?  Are there some inherent conflicts from professional standards or ethics violations?  What about the issue of continuity in corporate or personal branding?  Could this make it more difficult for some companies to allow their agents to use Social Media or Web 2.0 because it would become very difficult to monitor?

The conventional wisdom used to be that you never changed your brand identity or image.  However, today you can see McDonalds commercials which are highly segmented to appeal to specific audiences and cultures.  Should real estate agents be doing the same thing with their online branding?

What do you think?

I think I 'just gotta be me' and I think if they're all over pretending to be something they're not then they need to see someone for those mutliple personalities lol!

Sally, I think that it might be difficult to keep all the identities separate...from a branding perspective of course. :)

I have to say I think I agree with marketing your different strengths or skills to specific target markets.  I don't think any of us are static......so I'm not sure why our branding should be......I think times they are a changing and I personally like getting gripped and drawn in by a multi-faceted approach...

I beleive we should act professional in our business but that does not mean that we should pretend to be something we are not.

I like Gita's comment....pretending to be what we're not just for marketing is fake, and sooner or later the real person comes out....ready or not.  You can only fool yourself or others for so long.
