Ice Cream Social at Weber Blaess School house in Saline, MI

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Missy Caulk TEAM

Weber Blaess School eventThis Sunday, August 17th the Saline Area Schools Preservation Foundation will hold an old fashion ice cream social at the Weber Blaess School.

The Weber Blaess School is a one room school house that was restored in 2004. It was the former school house of students from Saline and Lodi Township. Each year different classes of elementary children at Saline Area Schools get to visit the school and see what it was like to attend school in a one room school house.

This Sunday, students can also experience the re-enactment of a typical day in one room school house, even using the McGuffey Readers and slateboards. The games kids played at recess, like hopscotch, graces will also be played.

Along with the fun events will be a Silent Auction fundraiser that will start at 1:00. Things to auction off include: a ride on the Saline Fire truck during the annual Christmas Parade, handmade quilts, shadow a Saline Police officer for day, cakes and cookie from Benny's bakery and an antique cart donated former State Representative Margaret O'Connor.

The Saline Area Fire Department will be there to demonstrate how fires were put out in the 1800's by transporting water to extinguish the blazes.

Home made ice creamLadies walking ar ound with parasols, home-made ice cream and lots of fun for the day.

All the funds raised will go to the Saline Area Schools Historical Preservation Foundation which was founded in 2001, for the sole purpose of maintaining the history of Saline Area Schools with an emphasis on the Weber Blaess School house.

The Weber Blaess School is located at 520 Woodland Dr, in Saline, MI.

Kathy Toth, yea I sleep! Went to bed last night after Michael Phelps won his 7th gold !! Get lots of good photos, I am at the lake and can't get back due to all the NASCAR traffic on Mi Avenue.

Liz, I love silent auctions and have picked up many good items at them.

Missy, this sounds like a fun time for a worthwhile cause.  I used to love watching Little House on the Prairie and a one-room schoolhouse brings that to mind.  Have fun tomorrow!

Sounds like a lot of fun!  Wish I had known about it sooner as I would have made plans to get up there, but we are already obligated for another event.  :(  Eat some ice-cream for me!

Hi Missy, that chocolate cone looks almost good enough to eat!  I may have to stop by our local Cold Stone today !

We have sort of a similar place here in Fishers, Indiana called Conner Prairie.  They go back in time and churn butter and have the one room school house....field trips always go there.  Maybe I should post about that on Localism!!!

Hi Missy, As I was looking at the picture and noticing the school, one cool thing you could do if you get some time is to  one day , try and locate some of the community's outstanding alumni of that one room school house. What an interesting article that would be. Have a great event and remeber , it is only one room but I would bet some famous feet have walked the floor boards there. And even if not famous, your interview would surely make them feel as though they were. Just an idea. I already know you know how my mind works,:-)

Hi Missy...I just had a big helping of butter pecan so I'm not tempted by that delicious chocolate ice cream cone, not even one teeny bit.

This looks like a fun event.

Missy, I love these "old time" events and this made me smile..I went to one of those old schoolhouses that only had two classrooms and really loved it before I was sent to the "big" school!  Ah, the memories.

Newcomers Welcome Service - Ann Arbor, MI

This is a wonderful program to retain a part of our history.  I especially enjoyed reading this because my husband attended a one room school house for his first two years of school.  He grew up on a farm that still used work horses into the 1950's! (No, his family is not Amish and he is not ancient, just past 60.)  When I first met him the school still set on the corner of the family farm and we would always visit it when we traveled to see his folks.  You could pull down the maps that the teacher used for geography class and the chalk board and erasers were still there.  The school has since been moved to a historic village; I miss being able to stand in it and imagine what it might have been like to go to school there.  I am glad the students of Saline get a chance for that experience.

I am going to see if I can get some information about the school to include in the Welcome Packets that we deliver to new residents in Saline.

Thanks for the post!

I love old school houses! This sounds like fun and hopefully raise a good amount of money to maintain the history of this school and others like it. Gotta love the pic of the ice cream!
