I keep telling people that I'm not that old, just delapidate. But, lately I've begun to question my age. It's not a health thing, in fact I've been feeling pretty good, all things considered. My problem is not my age, chronologically or physically, my problem is my vocabulary! Most of our words are old if not ancient, so it's not the words. My problem is that my meanings have become old fashion.

I'm finding that my expectations are exceeding my grasps. I love dealing with people especially when dealing in real estate and mortgages. I lust for the deal! I start each day with great expectations and a firm belief in people! I believe we find what we seek and I seek the best.

I've been actively dealing, long distant with a lot of real estate agents in the last few weeks. While it's easy to find people who loudly profess the same things I so profoundly believe in, it's the same words, but not with the meanings I grew up with!

Words like:

Service,

Common Courtesy,

Knowledge,

Professionalism,

Ethics,

Client,

Customer,

Agent,

Integrity,

Fiduciary!

May be the confusion is to be expected, from people that grew up with leaders that questioned the meaning of "is" and limited the meaning of "sex!" There was a time when no one questioned "is" and while we couldn't mention "sex" with out blushing we certainly knew what it meant.

You may add to the list, or you could define selected words for us.

Do these words still have meanings?

What should we expect when we see them used to promote an individual or company?

Is it fair for some one who grew up in the fifties and sixties to except the meaning to be the same as when he learned them?

Bill,

The meaning of words appears to be changing over time. Remember when we used to have a gay old time with the Jetsons on tv?

Uncle Bill...

There is nothing obsolete about the meaning of these words. Unfortunately, it is rare to find people who genuinely live by their words. It's become so easy to cast them about to spin the truth, hoping others will buy into the lie. Some of us still hold firm to those ideals and we honor their meaning in what we DO - not what we SAY.

The meaning of the words haven't changed.  It just seems like it when they come through voice mail or on a computer monitor.

Mike,

I went to high school with a young Lady who's first name was "Gay Lou" I remember her introducing herself and the older woman responding "Isn't that nice. I'm happy myself." Today they would respond, "that's more than we needed to know!"

My kids watched the Jettisons!

O'God maybe I am getting old! But then what are my parent's?

Jennifer,

"Unfortunately, it is rare to find people who genuinely live by their words"  What's more unfortunat is you're right.

We need a revial of those words in the hearts of men, not just talk but action.

Is that too much to believe?

Lenn,

If the meaning haven't changed, could it be that many just don't know the meanings?

Could it be like singer who sing  songs in other languages  phonically with no knowledge of the meanings? Some words just sound good!

Bill,

The words and their definitions for most Realtors have not changed.  What has changed is that a lot of people entering our professions did not intend to be "professional" but only intended to make a buck using our reputation for legitimacy.  Unfortunately, those of us who respect and take pride in the term Realtor, let them get away with it.  Now, we need to get back to the basics.

On a lighter side, here is a little Lexophile humor:

1. I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me.

2. Police were called to a daycare where a three-year-old was resisting a rest.

3. Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now.

4. To write with a broken pencil is pointless.

5. The short fortune teller who escaped from prison was a small medium at large.

6. A thief who stole a calendar got twelve months.

7. When the smog lifts in
Los Angeles, U.C.L.A.

8. The math professor went crazy with the blackboard. He did a number on it!

9. The professor discovered that her theory of earthquakes was on shaky ground.

10. The dead batteries were given out free of charge.

Those things all remain true.  There are NO substitutes for what you have outlined.

Who's that strapping young lad in the photo;-)

Jason,

That's the me, I see in the mirror each morning. He's a lot more spry than remains at my computer at the top right.

Queer, niggardly, black hole.  I think those are words that lost their 'old' meaning.  I'm showing my age!  :)

Yolanda,

Strangely different, cheep, and a collapsed star! How dare you? In print no less!

It's another side of the issue, but great food for though.

Thank you.

Bill - your list of words, as well as Jim's, still have the same meaning.  They just aren't being used anymore, at least not with the demand that they apply to anyone's life. After all, how can leaders that don't practice them expect their followers to do anything but disregard them.

In the end, it's all like the game of golf, it's what you do when no one is looking.

Mike,

Some of us do practice what we preach!

I'm very uncomfortable comparing life with golf, the only thing worse would be claiming that fisherman too were honest!

Bill - I am a golfer and a fisherman, but also an honest person (I would fail miserably at politics). I don't cheat at golf, or stretch the rules, because I would really just be cheating myself. As for the one's that got away, I think they were really big! LOL

Mike,

Not all golfers are lairs, some just don't add so well.

My Father and my Grand Fathers were all fishermen. I never knew any of them to lie about any fish photographed with a ruler.

Mom and Dad closed the sale of their lake home last month, if you ask the buyer they'd tell you Dad said it was rumored about 18 inch bluegills, not that there actually were such fish. Until recently Dad also played Golf.

So when you tell me about being an honest fisherman and golfer, I belive there is no evedance to the contary. Did I here right? You are a 300 bowler!

Bill,

If you start to use works such as "like" and "awesome" all the time, the younger folks will understand you better.  I might get annoyed, but what does that matter?

Words have been white washed, bleached, beaten, shortened and in general HAVE lost their original meaning, just like religion, morals, ethics, education and values.

Cheri,

I'd add "some"for thank God many still remember the meanings and are true to our beliefs! Unfortunately, you're so right about many others.

Thanks for commenting, so many don't.
