Jon,

What does the plus and minus mean? or no plus or minus?

A little explanation would be nice.  What do the numbers mean?  What are the rankings based on?  Where is ActiveRain?

6:31pm • #3

Hate to sound like an idiot, but I don't get it. I am guessing this is google indexing, however, for who, for what?

Hi Jonathan...Barry here...thanks for the mention of Real Estate Radio USA. I did not realize that you would be doing this again so soon and I forgot to submit our new local real estate blog.

The Fort Lauderdale Real Estate Blog was launched on April 28, 2008 and in just a few months, we would be in the 39th slot on your chart here. Not bad company!

Our combined score is 436,000. We have worked very hard to build the Fort Lauderdale Real Estate Blog and the utilization of Active Rain helped quite a bit in dribving traffic.

Look forward to seeing the Fort Lauderdale blog on the next update of your list.

Jonathan,

Well the way I see it.  If you are on this list it is a good thing.  The only thing counter-intuitive to me is the average numbers getting bigger as you go down the list.

I am just checking out all of the blogs and seeing what it takes to become successful.

I figure it does not hurt.

How does Activerain as a whole stand comparatively?  Am I missing it or is this just independent blogs or team of bloggers?

Thank you for the information!

George

Thanks (again) Jonathan for putting this together.

All the "+/-" indicates the change since last months list. For example, my blog is at #8, with a +5. SO it went up 5 places from last month, when it was #13.

The number is an average of Compete and Alexa rankings.

This also explains why the numbers get bigger as you go down the list. Compete and Alexa rank wesites based on traffic (and do a very poor job of it according to most). So the sight with the highest traffic would have a Compete/Alexa ranking of 1. Less traffic = bigger number (since the site is further down the list.

These are indivdual blogs (well, and multi-author blogs) "outside" the rain. AR isn't on the list because it wouldn't be comparing anything similar to a blog hosted on it's own domain.

And no, it is NOWHERE near a comprehensive list. But it's a fun look at some great "outside blogs".

Thanks for investing the time to put this together, Jonathan, even though I slipped by 19.  Only thing I can figure out is that I was gone or almost six weeks, and without Internet access most of three weeks.  I guess we'll know that's the reason if it improves next month!

Thanks Jonathan,

Still can't figure out why Compete is not picking up my blog -- but we are 1,935,481 for Alexa... and our traffic according to Compete.com is higher then TheLandlordblog.com (currently #75 on the list above.) -->

http://siteanalytics.compete.com/lasvegasrealestate4u.com+thelandlordblog.com/?metric=uv

Hmmm... Compete says that we only had 801 visitors for July but my internal stats show over 2,000 for July... I've got to figure out how to play this game.. :)

I find numbers like these quite interesting.  I understand what they mean, but find it puzzling how the numbers get assigned.  I have not been posting on my blog for awhile now and yet it moved up 4 spots.  Cool for me, but puzzled by that.  It will be interesting to see how it moves when I do get back to posting regularly again.

It's nice to see so many people I know on this list - congrats to all.

This gets my competitive juices going!  I just recently met the Indianapolis Blog person listed up there, she's my hero!   I think the point of all of this is that it does matter that you blog consistently and use your titles, taglines, etc appropriately and to get the best bang for the buck.  It's great to just be able to talk about real estate without paying a fee and watch your postioning improve.

As always, thank you very much for inclusion in the list.  I honestly can't fathom how it is I've soared past so many amazing bloggers.  I'll have to double the pay I'm offering my family members...

It's also good to see that Mr. Dalton is back on the list after his domain change, not to mention how many AZ blogs are on the list.

I clicked through to learn more about these successful blogs.  I was surprised to see that some of them have broken links.  I'm not talking about third party links in posts, I'm talking about basics.  On one blog I clicked "Archive" and got a 404 "page not found" error.  I wanted to send a private note to the owners to let them know, but the "Contact" link also returned a 404 error.  It's great to celebrate success, but it's also important to periodically check for broken links.  How is your blog going to generate leads if your contact page isn't working?  More likely readers will take the snarky advice on the page (WordPress suffers from a bad case of faux hipsteritis) and "punt" because it's not their fault they ended up "totally in the wrong place."

Frank, you make such a great point - I have found my blog with temporary glitches here and there so my advice is to have contact information all over the place just in case.  I have my number on the header and the left column, also the contact form and in a couple of other places.  Glitches are common, you just hope they don't happen right when a customer is trying to reach you.
