Gas prices and mentality

Gas prices are undoubtedly very high for a country that has an abundant oil resources and an unsurpassed production capability. The barrel of crude is selling today for $113.00 a week ago was $118.00 and 2 weeks ago was $120.00. The oil price has taken a descending route towards becoming more affordable although it is still expensive. This price decrease appeared upon strong pressure by the Congress to expand the USA exploration for oil and start drilling for more oil.

So what is next if oil goes down to $70.00 per barrel and gas prices at the pump drop down to $2.50 per gallon shall we forget the fact that we still need renewable sources of energy and our suffering at the pumps? Will auto-makers forget and start building bigger and more gas-thirsty vehicles?
