We Need A Hero
I have studies the lives of HERO's from my youth, and why people remember certain
attributes as heroic. I have noted that no one was ever remembered as a HERO
because of selfish gain or the desire for popularity. In fact, these traits were a blemish.
The HERO is ALWAYS defined by SACRIFICE FOR OTHERS. The more black the
background, the brighter the diamond. The greater the sacrifice, the greater the HERO.
I remember as a child being drawn to the stories of George Washington and Abraham
Lincoln because of their sacrifice to our country during times of great struggle. Later
I began to search for the ingredients of other great men in order to see what made their
character rise above other men. I studies the lives of war heroes, biblical heroes, and
heroes though out various cultures and periods in history. The common thread that
measured a HERO WAS ALWAYS SACRIFICE. It appears that we humans have
been hard wired to recognize greatness by something that is consistent in all societies
and cultures throughout time.
In this day and time, when so many virtues of goodness are mocked and ridiculed, I
think we are searching for some hero's more than ever. When so many that attempt
to be leaders are really masters of posturing, our inner spirit yearns for someone who
is genuine and real. Where is someone we can really respect, trust and inspire us... and
call them a true HERO. Who will forget themselves and live for others, where are they?
I always rejoice when I hear teenagers say they admire their parents. It is becoming
more rare and we need it so much. Where are the fathers that we can depend on?
Where are the ministers that will not let us down? Where are the political leaders that
people will not smirk at when they speak? Where are the sports stars that we do not
have to worry about when I children look up to them? Where are the HEROES?
Who was your greatest HERO and WHY?
