Montana Golfing Rules Just Released: The Montana State Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising golfers to take extra precautions.

Be on the alert for bears while playing on Missoula, Gallatin, Helena, and Lewis and Clark National Forests Golf Courses.

They advise golfers to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert, but not to startle the bears unexpectedly.

They also advise you to carry pepper spray in the case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for signs of bear activity. Golfers should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear droppings on the golf course.

Black bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear droppings have bells in them and smell like pepper spray.

This is no joke - we actually had to delay our golf game at the University Golf course a few years ago due to bears - there was a cub in the tree and they were worried that mama bear was on the course!

Clint - I have seen the signs near Helena, I have a picture of one somewhere. In many places there are signs to not go into the deep rough after your ball, snakes. In Florida, stay away from the water - gaters. In the Philipines, you get a free drop if a monkey steals your ball.

In Australia- look out for 'roos mate.

Kevin and Monica -- apparently, we were there on the same day...LOL.  We had to reschedule a tee time for bears on the course.

Richard -- Thanks!  Yeah...that one truly is a punch line...LOL

Mike -- yeah, we really dont have to worry about much when golfing...but, being mauled by a bear after 5 beers on the green of the 9th hole doesnt sound like a great time to me...LOL
