My lovely wife is a paralegal...and being such, has access to the Montana Anotated Code.  (That means she knows the laws here for us non-legal peeps...)  Anyways...she brought home a few of the best and dumbest the other day...and I just had to share.

In Montana....

  • It is illegal to have a sheep in the cab of your truck without a chaperone.
  • It is a felony for a wife to open her husband's mail.
  • Seven or more indians are considered a raiding or war party and it is legal to shoot them. (Repealed)
  • It is a misdemeanor to show movies that depict acts of felonious crime.
  • It is illegal for married women to go fishing alone on Sundays, and illegal for unmarried women to fish alone at all.
  • When a prisoner is discharged from the penal system, the local authorities are supposed to give you a horse and a pistol.

The following ones are specific to the local communites highlighted --

Excelsior Springs
Balls may not be thrown within the city limits.

Helena
No item may be thrown across a street.

Salisbury
Pop bottles are not to be thrown on the ground.  They can be placed there, but not thrown.

Whitehall
It is illegal to operate a vehicle with ice picks attached to the wheels.

Clint...

So if I drive to Whitehall I have to take the ice picks off of my wheels? And I also pick up women while fishing so that's a bummer.

Clint - LMAO I often wonder what was the catalyst to get some of these laws on the books.

I would be especially interested in what led up to the sheep and the chaperone. I am not even going to let my imagination go there.

LOL I don't think I want to know what led up to any of them!

Clint, I told some of these to my family at dinner earlier, and my 13 yr old daughter points out (sarcastically), "Can she wear all three pounds two ounces on just her head?"  I thought my husband was going to choke - I've never seen him so red!  So, thanks for laughs - twice!!!

Clint - those are just hysterical!  I might have to dig up some crazy ones around here.  You would think that from time to time the "old" laws would be reviewed!

Those are funny laws.  They are almost as funny as the old Blue Law that was all over the south.  Only certain items could be sold on Sunday and trying to figure out what they were was impossible.  It was the stupidest thing ever.

Barbara -- I have heard about the blue laws before...and yes, they were ridiculous.  Some of these here are as well...I just found another one where barbers in Missoula were not allowed to eat onions or garlic prior to 6pm on weekdays...LOL
