Have you discovered Snook yet?

What goes through your mind when you pull into the parking lot of the restaurant that you picked out, only to see that the line of people waiting on tables has gone out  the door?    Are you willing to wait?

In College Station it is not uncommon to have long waits in the evenings and on weekends.  This morning, it occurred to me that it would take less time to drive to Snook for a mouth watering steak, than it would to wait in line for a table at a popular College Station restaurant.

 Have you discovered Snook yet?

Snook is a friendly farming community located 12 miles west of College Station on Highway 60.  Snook sign

Although residents are very proud of their high school football and basketball teams, they know that Snook is home to some of the best kolaches, steaks, sausage and chicken fried bacon around.  Whether you are coming from Bryan, College Station, Lake Sommerville or Caldwell, the Czech-Tex Steak House and Bakery, Sodolak's Original Country Inn and  Slovacek's are all well worth the 15 minute drive.   (If you can't make the drive, Slovacek Sausage can be found in grocery stores across Texas.)

Just a little hint....Snook may not be the best town to visit if you are serious about sticking to your diet.

Pasture in SnookSnook is also home to what has been described as "the Brazos Valley area's most anticipated event," Chilifest.  It is held every April at the Snook Rodeo Arena grounds.  The charitable fundraiser has donated over $700,000 to a numerous charities since 2000.

Basically, Chilifest is a HUGE party in a pasture that benefits a number of great causes.

It features two days of musical entertainment and a chili cook-off.  Headliners have included Willie Nelson, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Sammy Kershaw, Mark Chestnut, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Tracy Lawrence, Robert Earl Keen, and many others.

Sondra, I hadn't seen the Texas Country Reporter Bob Philips in years. He used to be the Channel 8 Dallas Texas Reporter. Sodolak's looks cool. You know all the good spots. I never heard of Snook, TX but it is close to you. The Chilifest and the rodeo sound great too. That's a significant amount of dollars for a fund raiser. I wonder what makes it a Czech-Tex style other than the name of the restaurant? Chicken Fried Bacon is tasty I bet but so way off my diet. You are corrupting me again with your delectable dishes ; ) Great links to everything and your photos, well, we know your photos are going to be the best :)

Sondra, I'm really not that far from you but I have never heard of Snook.  You would think with the Chilifest fundraiser I would have heard of it.  Well I have now.

Bringing you home...

I've never known that there was a town called Snook. Sounds like something that should be on a tv program or something. :-)

See It. Experience It. Live It.

Trey, you are so right.  I got distracted thinking about the food.

Carolyn, actually the best thing in Snook is the kolaches.  Yum, yum.  I hope you are enjoying your vacation.  It would be a riot if we could convience you to move to TX.

Gary, Chilifest pulls in about 20,000 people - mostly college aged people, if I understand right.  Chili-cook off contestants are allowed in the night before and can bring couches to sit on etc.  The money to donate adds up quickly.  Most of the people in the town are of Czech decent.  I've always considered Snook my kolache source.

Marchel,   Snook has less than 600 people, so it's pretty small.   Chilifest seems to be heavily promoted to the college age crowd.

Lindsey, thanks for stopping by.  I think Snook may even be the name of some sort of fish.  The town was named after one of their postmasters.

Raylene, If you have someone that likes the 400 acre tract but can't afford it, I have a 45 acre tract for sale that is about 4 miles down the road from the 400 acre tract - for a mere $199,000.  The larger tract is currently being farmed.  My seller's tract had been used for cattle and has a house on it.   Pretty piece of property close to yummy food and College Station.
