Unspoken rules and guidelines don't cut it. Especially in a social network the size of ActiveRain.

While it's been made quite clear from the very beginning that points are earned and bestowed to ActiveRain members who contribute their own original content, there's been a few 'unspoken' areas that are in dire need of clarification and specific mention. We've been entirely much too lax towards this issue, and it's time for us to put a little more meat on the requirements as to what constitutes 'point-worthy' content.

Let's address the obvious, shall we?

Jokes. There's nothing wrong with jokes. We can all use a good laugh at times, especially when the market's in the toilet. But unless you're a gifted stand-up comedian, chances are any joke you share here is simply re-telling someone else's joke. As such, it's not your own original content, and should not warrant points.

Recipes. Same thing. We're not questioning the value proposition of passing recipes. Heck, I've got a killer recipe for Dungeness Crab Cakes if you want it. Sharing recipes is as American as apple pie and ballpark franks. But unless you're Julia Child, in most instances, it's not your own original content, and should not warrant points.

Newsletters. Many of us receive weekly or monthly newsletters from our brokerage corporate, or from paid subscriptions services/sources. Even though you may have permission to re-post these newsletters, the fact remains, it's not your own original content and should not warrant points.

Bible verses. Yep, plagiarizing God. While I'm confident that the Big Man doesn't mind being quoted, and often, unless your name is Paul or Moses, you're not the original author, and it should not warrant points.

Please don't misunderstand our point here. We're not outlawing jokes, or recipes, newsletters, or Scripture verses. We're simply saying that points will not be awarded when you publish them.

Anytime you wish to publish content to your blog that isn't your own, and you have permission to re-post it, there is a nifty little box down towards the 'Post Blog Entry' button. I bet most of you didn't even know it was there!

It says, "This is not my content but I have permission to repost it." If you click on the box, points are not awarded for that particular post, and the 'No Points' symbol will show up accordingly.

We're constantly trying to improve our/your network, and make everyone's experience a positive one. The requirements for earning points needs to be fair and equitable to all members, and should serve as a means of rewarding those who consistently contribute good, quality, original content.

This post was not written nor intended to address or lay guilt against any one particular member or group. A clear definitive policy on this issue should have been implemented at the very start of our network. One of the most common 'Contact ActiveRain' tickets that we receive are complaints against members who rack up quick points by posting content that isn't their own. This clearly is not fair to those who are making genuine effort. Good, effective blogging takes lots of hard work and energy. In order to make point scoring fair and equitable, we need to tighten up some of the obvious loose ends.

Hi Rich...Will the marketing reports that are cut and paste with fill in the blanks (amounting to about 20-25 original words) continue to count as 200 points?

If so, are they considered original content?

Luckily, I am a comedian, cook and prophet...  Stop laughing.  Seriously.  Ok, I'm not really a prophet.  And I only have one original recipe.  And I'm a quick wit, but can't put together a routine.  But aside from that...

My group, The AR Cookbook....enter your favorite recipes here for all to enjoy. is only for original recipes, and is totally for the compilation of an AR cookbook.  I have deleted many who have not conformed to the rules. The recipes are to be posted to my group, not the the main AR site.

So, there is going to be a future benefit to my group as once I have 500 recipes, I will put them in book form, and it will be a great gift at closing...a page for thank's and your card...Who will lose a cookbook like that?  A card maybe, not the cookbook.

The rules state, original recipes.  I cleaned house a few weeks ago.

So, if there are issues with this, please call me. I've written a cookbook, not published yet, with over 300 original recipes...so, there are people who cook.

I'm not really sure that most of the member's of my group care that much about points...I'm not a member of the "recipe" group, so what's your point.

We just love to cook and we are all happy sharing recipe's for a future AR cookbook...

EWE....call me.

The main problem is that you go on the honor system, and you're still not going to get the majority to follow the rules if they know they can still get the points by just not checking the box.  I like to think people are fair and honest, but the sad part is that too many people are not.

If my "spot" in NY were compromised by someone posting material constantly slapped together   (instead of laziness and lack of inspiration on my part, which is within my control) I'd be quite annoyed. I want to drop like lead the fair way, as is the case in my area. Too much work involved with original material to get ousted by un-thought-out regurgitation. Good for AR.

*edit: a cookbook with original recipes?  If it's REALLY easy to make- I'm visiting Karen's group.

Poor Rich, what a way to spend your Saturday night!  If I change the crab in your recipe to crawfish, does that count as original?  JUST KIDDING!!

I'm glad to see some of these changes being made - with so many new members, they may be confused by what's acceptable and what's not if they are reading through old posts and kudos to you guys for clarifying it in such a nice way.

MOst of it makes sense to me....except for recipes, I have many many original recipes, in fact I am pretty much incapible of following a recipe unless it is my own and I have lots and lots of them.  If I want to share these, should seem to be point worthy.  However if we are not supposed to get points for it then how do we be sure none are awarded?

Anyone that wants my recent spaghetti sauce recipe can have it: 1 bottle of generic Italian sauce; 1 huge glob of sour cream in there, in an effort to copy the lighter colored sauce described as authentic or northern italian or something. It was the most horrible sauce I've ever had, if I do say so myself. Evidently, cooks put something more than a blop of sour cream to get that light color- it tasted so good at the restaurant. I want the AR cookbook.

Hi Rich,

I have never written about any of these issues that you mentioned.  I have not even read posts about the issues you have mentioned, probably since I do not read anything unless it attracts my attention.  Now it would seem to me that this might be the way to take care of this issue.  If there is no one who wishes to read about an issue, people will cease to address that issue.  It is a form of supply and demand.  As long as there is an audience, they will continue to write, when the audience disappears, the post will change.

11:53pm • #37

Hi Rich,

To be honest, there is no point of points.  I feel we blog here to voice professional opinions, help each other as Professionals understand the ups and downs of our careers which will, in fact, help us learn more.

Additionally, in Members Only, it is a way to express that we are humans too.  By Posting to members only, we are simply stating what the true meaning is of basic humanity.

What bothers me most is there is one in particular blogger that is continues to copy and paste articles from an online magazine pertaining to real estate.  What made me even more mad is seeing one of my articles that has a copy right on it, printed in our New Paper under Realtor's corner.  So my solution is let the attorney handle that part.

I love Active Rain though, points or no points, it gives us all to send the messages about everything, anything, anywhere.

Let's see - no posting of other's content , gotcha...

Actually it is okay to post someone else's content under fair use guidelines which Rich also needs to discuss in more detail.  Common sense dictates giving credit to the original author or source with an actual link, posting excerpts only, and making sure it is clear to your audience that they are excerpts by using a different font, style, or color to differentiate your comments from the excerpts.

...did not do that anyway

Bravo!

The plagiarizing and reblogging crowd doesn't seem to understand how important it is to find your own voice.  I've outed several plagiarizers and in each case the theft (or approved verbatim copying to get an outbound link) was obvious at a glance.  If it sounds like the description of a local hotel came straight from the hotel's own promotional material, it probably did.

Give us your own thoughts, or at least your own responses to excerpts of someone else's thoughts.

Don't try to take credit for someone else's words.

Please... and thanks!

I think original recipes should be the recipient of points.  Seems like their content to me.  If they fixed another recipe to their liking, it is still their original content... Just like every car maker that makes a unique car with 4 wheels, an engine, and steering system has made their own car...

Evolution and improvement is progress and I believe should be considered original content.

Copying is copying and should not be considered original content.  There will always be gray area and abuse of it.

I do like the idea of changing the check-box to read more like "this is my original content"... I think the guilty feelings inspired there would have a positive effect.

Looks like "recipes" is the hot topic for commenting.  Here's a question, what do you think about points for listings?  I feel like that is what a lot of blogs rely on and that doesn't give me much of a feel for the "person".  I post them from time to time but have other content as well.

Here is a different response.  This is a free and open medium.  Who decides what is good content? Will a bad recipe take away points? Will those that write religious posts be docked for their beliefs.  Be careful, the cure may be worse than the illness.

8:34am • #61

Bravo....I think we need to put the focus back on Real Estate, the market, the home buying and selling process,  consumer tips and realtors sharing tools, techniques and business advice...I personally would love to have you eliminate points for Listings and Community tour ( let me show ou the lovely town of X ) type of posts...they should get tracked straight over to Localism and only earn points there!

8:45am • #62

Home Realty - Rich isn't saying those things can't be posted.  He's saying they won't receive points, that's all.

He's not trying to change the focus of our blogs - our blogs are our blogs - we can post whatever we want: jokes, recipes, scripture verses, market reports, listings, etc.  He's simply clarifying that jokes, recipes and scripture verses are not original content (except in some rare cases).  Content that is not original is not point worthy.

Listings and market reports are original content, therefore they are point worthy.

Did I understand you correctly Rich?

Dale:  That really is a 'different' response. A primary premise behind the point system was to encourage and reward original content. Even though this is a network for real estate professionals, we don't tell people what they can or can't write about. And it's not about good versus bad content, per se. But more about publishing your own work, rather than simply copying someone elses, and getting credit for it. If a member wishes to write a 'religious' post, we have no problem. Just make sure that the majority of source material is their own original content.

This is a tough one. I think the issue is not the content, but how it is used.  Clearly there are many religious people who quote Scripture and then make their blog reflect that quote.  That is an inspiration for original content which is very appropriate I think.  That is much different than posting the book of Genesis on your blog.

I think the same thing with recipes.  If I was talking about crabbing in Oregon and posted a recipe, with proper credit, as part of a longer post about the area, I think that is fine.  The recipe is not the focus of the post, but more about enjoying Oregon and here is a recipe for you after you are done.

It seems to me that if AR really wants to get this issue under control they should make a "blog manual" for newbies that is required reading before you post.  I know Brad wrote some great blogs about using AR that are fabulous, but I would also include examples of plagiarized posts, some of Lenn's blogs about plagiarism, and examples of blogs that use and quote material appropriately.

AR is a behemouth that is going to continue to grow.  It seems to be that having to deal with this issue on a regular basis is a waste of all of your time.  Doesn't it make more sense to get the AR bloggers "trained" from the get go, so that you only have to deal with the serious abusers?  It's kinda like parenting.  You can teach your kids the rules at a very early age and then guide them as they grow, or you can let them run rampant and then try and reel it in later.  That latter plan never works as well and requires so much more effort than if you had just set the limits with your kids from the get go.

Rich, I have to disagree with Christina's comment being "spot on". We are not free to post whatever we want. We are however free to post whatever we want as long as it fits into the overall theme and guidelines of ActiveRain. While this site may be free and open to all in our profession it is NOT governed by free speech and the first amendment as some would think. This is a private site and we are guest. There are rules and regulations put down by the owners of this site. They can decide what stays and what goes based on their sole discretion.  I feel this is important to understand.

Good God, has there ever been a featured post about content that hasn't provided the launching pad for your sour grapes, Kathy?  Every time there is a virtual argument here on AR, I seem to find you standing at the powderkeg with a match in your hands.  How about those of us who are tired of certain people carping about how we choose to entertain ourselves when we are taking a break from our more serious postings?  If our banal little group isn't for you, why in God's green earth do you even read it?  I certainly don't seek out the blogs and groups, let alone nasty bloggers, that rub me wrong.  For all of the offense you take with our shenanigans, I'd venture that there is not one group member who couldn't write their way out of your wet paper bag.  Bitter, party of one, your blog is ready.  Now if you haven't already, would you please unsubscribe from my blog?  I've been trying to shake you for months.

YIKES!!! Calm down now. I also think it's important when we have these "content" discussions to remember there are two sides to AR. The consumer side and the "members only" side. From what I've seen most of the "hijacked" posts are "members only" so I'm not quite sure why that should concern anyone at all. Now having said that I actually do not participate in "hijackings". It's just not my style. But I personally see no harm in them. It's probably a good way to wind down. I believe this post is about content not comments.

I forgot that everybody hasn't read my latest post about religious intrusion and how it relates to real estate.  So, they probably wouldn't recognize the humor in my comment.  However, at least 3 people have and did.  I hope it wasn't taken as intrusive.  It was in jest.

Hi Rich...Melina's idea about a Blog Manual might be a good idea.  When I started it seemed like I hunted around to learn some of the do's and don'ts.  I read the guidelines but there is so much more to learn.  I'm still learning.

However, this may be fine for people just joining the Rain but what about the rest of us?  There are probably a good number of folks that have been on here for some time posting things that you mentioned above:  jokes, bible verses, newsletters, etc.  Not everyone is even going to read this post and know what is OK to post.

It is also very possible that all the plagiarizing is not done by brand new members.  No doubt you would know the answer to that.  I've been here since last fall and there were comments about gaming the system for points, value of certain types of posts, and plagiarizing.  These problems have evidently been here for some time which means it is not just Newbies.

Perhaps the moderators can help monitor the posts to their respective groups.  If it contains topics that are not acceptable according to the guidelines and have received points they could flag it or notify the writer.

(If that last suggestion is unacceptable pretend you did not see it here.  See, I surrender easily.)

The fact that people can still post about the things that matter to them is great.  The fact that they will not receive points for some types of posts is right also.  As long as we know beforehand what the guidelines are there are no surprises.

Kate

Thank you for this post--I am fairly new and love this site.  There is so much to learn! Itseems like a lot of the guidelines fall in the "common sense" department.  While I have to admit--I have not memorized all the guidelines to all the groups--I have been deleted from some--and rightfully so--if I violate a guideline--am ok with that!

At first it is hard to accept being deleted from a group and gettig an email saying:
"you have been delete from a the group"  It hurts!  But how else will one learn!  So I will take time to study your guideline but hope that I am given a chance to correct any violations!

Thank you and take care!

Wow!  I must say, I missed the trenches of this one... which isn't necessarily a bad thing.  I don't want to come off as the chap carrying the olive branch over his shoulder to make things right... cause I'm not that chap.  Mr. & Mrs. Consumer may be looking in from afar, we should interact accordingly.  We are ultimately here for them, or at least should be.  Strange words coming from an 'edgy' guy... I know.  We are living in an environment that is pretty tough, pretty rough, stress sometimes oozes from the very pores we moisturize.  Okay, maybe that's just me... I moisturize, Damn it!

When I look at AR and its contributors, I see the Renaissance of Real Estate.  Perhaps I'll post those very thoughts at a later date.  There's an abundance of talent in these parts.  Not everyone is going to get along or stroke the ego of the next, and that's fine.  At the tender of age of 32, I'm slowly beginning to get to know this world, its people, and me.  I have a lot of evolving to do... as do we all.

I leave you with a song, as shocking as that may be;-)  I've used it before, so its nothing new.  We can do this, the opportunity is there for the taking... help, don't hurt.  And I know this guy named Happy Jack who smirks even when he is down.

Right, Kathy.  This is simply the latest post you managed to comandeer to steer towards whatever axe you have to grind.  Best of luck with your struggle to force the world to conform to your perspective.  As for bringing out my writing without the antics, that is laughable.  I do so with regularity, as do the other members of the group you so despise.  No need for you to mention my name as I am listed right on the group homepage as the founder of Jacked.

Now, shall I troll through your posts and list those that I find objectionable here?  How about the ones which include information I deem too personal for a professional setting?  Interesting that your legion of folks who find the antics in our little corner objectionable sure don't seem to have affected the subscriber numbers of many of my cohorts.  Seems someone wants to read their daycare nonsense.  Go worry about your own blog.

Did I mention my numbers, Kathy?  I think not.  I invite you to reread that comment.  I mentioned the numbers of some of my friends here in the Rain as a counterpoint to your assertion that our antics are the cause of much consternation.  Seems like your couple of emailed complaints versus hundreds of people who read these blogs is a bit flimsy, no?  Now I see all of the old jealousy resurfacing.  This is what caused the train wreck on that post all those months ago.  The funny thing is that I do not have a subscribe button either, nor have I EVER sent an email to a group or solicited comments.  Funny that those who do such get you worked up, though.  I simply ignore what I find distasteful.  Do you not see the humor in painting yourself as the victim of an attack?  You jump on a post, stir the pot by calling out a group of bloggers on a matter that does not pertain to the post whatsoever, and then you act the martyr when someone calls you on it.

And I certainly do not read what you write.

Paul- Touche on the dashboard....you are right.  As to the numbers, I do not care one bit for your "friends" numbers, nor anyone else's.  I also find it absurd that comparing "hundreds of subscribers" to a "couple of emailed complaints" as even being important.  Many people subscribe for one reason or another that doesn't mean they agree with everything someone says or does......

Your comment" Now I see the old jealousy resurfacing"  I find to actually be funny......and who is jealous of who?  None of you mean diddly to me.....you are talking about your "cohorts" again aren't you since you said you were given a bug in your ear about my comment.

You also stated I jump on a Post, stir the pot, and then call myself a martyr".....There is no way on Gods Green Earth that I feel like a victim.  That would give you power over me, which you do not have.  I have my own mind, and am totally responsible for my choices and behaviors.  And calling someone on their opinion in the manner in which you did, in my opinion, was uncalled for AGAIN.  Does that make me a victim because you "go off"...nope, that just means you cannot control your own behavior.

I commented on this Post to state an opinion of "content"..period!

It would be who is jealous of whom, but I digress.  I am as equally unimpressed with your opinion as you are of mine, and I confess to enjoying the past seven or eight months of not crossing paths.  Notice where we seem to run afoul of that avoidance?  On featured posts where you use the pulpit to voice your objections as to how others blog or otherwise comport themselves.  Would you enjoy the shoe being on the other foot?  I think not.  Who are you to tell others how to blog or interact?  You won't find me criticizing the practices of others on here.  I only respond to those who do not afford me the same respect.  My blog, my rules.  Stop trying to force your will on others.  You find my reaction a tantrum?  Shoot, that's not even the warmup act.  When you attempt to impose your myopic views on others as it pertains to their choice of expression, it tends to be ill received.

Well you managed to call it by it's name, Kathy.  Regardless, I take offense to you trying to stomp the fun out of any blogger's life.  Guess what?  We started a group for this "nonsense" as a lark.  Never mentioned it to anyone.  It was to be our own private Idaho.  Now plenty of people submit stuff to it to be entertained.  What's nonsense to you is good old fashioned fun at the end of a long day for others.  Why do you even care?  Just as your blog doesn't need my stamp of approval, why does anyone else require yours?

That's it, I'm going to bed.  If I wake up to find AR taking your side and outlawing fun, I will fold my tent and leave.  I'm guessing they won't do so, though.  They don't want a completely dry site any more than the rest of us.

2:21am • #132
287,662 Points 33 Featured Posts Outside Blog

Paul- From day one I have advocated people should be themselves and not be followers.  Nobody needs my "stamp of approval" except the Agents in my Company.  And that is only because of the legal liability.

I don't care for certain things, but I don't have to like what others do....I am responsible only for myself.  Taking on the responsibility of others is time consuming and as Rich stated takes a lot of energy that I typically prefer to put to more Positive uses.  Unless of course I don't care at the time who disagrees with my opinion.

From my own experiences, I know it to be true that one persons "fun" can actually be harmful, or insulting to many.  Do those people speak up...no they don't, at least not in mass. A few months back there was a perfect example of this.....and it had nothing to do with you or your friends.

David: It's not typically my style to delete comments, unless they clearly violate our guidelines. Sometimes these posts just seem to take on a life of their own!....

I can't believe I missed this last week!  I did a search for the button to further explain it and found it!

Thank you for attempting to shout this from the rooftops. It's bothersome to see copy and paste, copy and paste - and you didn't even address the copywrite issues along with it - which is a whole other subject.

Well said and it I applaud you for taking the steps to put it out there, now if we can just get people to click on that little box!

I just saw a post from someone who lost 15,000 points for blonde jokes.  That's a lot of blonde jokes.  Someone in the comments to his farewell post  said recipes, jokes and quotes were not allowed on ActiveRain.  I thought it was probably that points were no longer awarded so came via the Guidelines which say no points for recipes, jokes, quotes, etc.  What an interesting conversation here in the comments!

15,000 points in blonde jokes? Can you imagine all the whining ActiveRain probably got from other members not to mention all the flagged  joke posts.  15,000 posts... at 200 points each?  Or what is it we get for putting them in channels... an extra 25 points?   That's 75 at 200 or 66.66666 well a whole buncha 6's for 225 points.

This has always been a sore spot of contention for me. I don't think we've really pursued this issue has strongly as we should. I tried best as I could to police some of the bigger culprits when I had the ability to do so, but sadly, many of them are still posting away, acruing points for unoriginal plagiarized content....There are obviously much bigger issues and fish to fry for the AR staff these days....

Hi Rich!  A year and a half later, I find this post!  Funny but, I had NO intention of reading each and every one of the comments but, I just couldn't help myself!  While I ate a pint of orange sherbet, I read...

First of all, I'm blonde so I'm glad you made them stop with the blonde jokes!  LOL  I'm only kidding--I gave the blogger grief about always picking on blondes and explained to him the difference in the intellect levels of those of us who are TRUE blondes and those who are blonde from the bottle!

Interesting observation:  It seems that Kathy did a little of what she was criticizing others of doing and hijacked your blog while no one even seemed to notice!

Of course, our precious Paul got all of his 10 comments for the day in right here on your post too!  LOL

OH, and I'd love that crab recipe!!

I hope you're having a fabulous weekend...

Rich, well Maureen just revived this whole thing. I never saw this post and all I want is the dang Crab Cake recipe....give it up!

Forget the Popcorn...just give me those Crab Cakes!

On a serious note, I find it sad that these things occurred and we lost some goodness along the way. I miss those days when people were having fun....and why would it ever be seen other than celebration of spirit and fun. Life is meant to be diverse and fun is healthy and needed. You pointed out so well that this Industry bares enough stress without us judging others here within the RAIN!

I love it all and enjoy the opportunity for engagement. Even the good argument brings the opportunity to learn and change. Through engagement people have the opportunity to evolve. I know....I get up on this soap box every once in a while....but even the heated post offers opportunity!

Here I am just going over to look at what Maureen is up to and 1 hour later....I'm writing a comment. I had to read the entire thread and it is always a process of evolution in thought and exchange. I see so much value and my heart feels a bit hurt that we have lost something in the process.

No, not the blonde jokes....

Okay, you KNOW I'm kidding, right?!  If I had TWO points, I'd be fine--I don't blog for points, I blog for my consumer to find me and to meet other awesome members here!  They don't look to see who has the most points--except in their own areas!  I'm in the middle of another points post right now--I heard rumblings of members being concerned about this alot lately and I just don't get it!

Great...now Paul Slaybaugh is gonna start quoting Revelations and use this post as his loophole for points.

You just had to go and put ideas in his big ol' head, didn't ya, Rich?  :)
