"Feelin' Crabby?" - Life on the Kitsap Peninsula WA

By
Real Estate Agent with Fathom Realty West Sound WA State 52404

One of my favorites things I enjoy about living on the beautiful Kitsap Peninsula here in scenic Washington State, is taking my boat out crabbing on the Hood Canal, part of the extensive inland waterways of Puget Sound. The Hood Canal is a long, deep, narrow strip of water wedged in between the Kitsap Peninsula and the picturesque Olympic Peninsula. The Olympic Mountain range rises up rather dramatically from the edge of the water. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking.!

Rich- that sounds quite yummy. I must agree the scenery on the channels with the Olympic mountains as a back drop is absolulely breathtaking to say the least. I just love mountains! So why am I in a place where the only hills are the waste disposal sites? :) Well, we have gorgeous warm beaches and sunshine.

Rich, I can't wait.  Our Crab Season opens 1st Saturday in November...  We have a limit of 10/license/day.   Last year we probablly averaged 6 per.  I hope this year is as good or better.  We have about 2 weeks before the commercial guys come into play. I will let you know how we do. AJ

Rich, ah!  Your crab recipe!  Those things are really huge - make our almost extinct Maryland blue crabs look pretty puny!

Rich, my mouth is watering for crabs!  I haven't had any this summer!  I'm Italian and I like to clean them, put olive oil in the bottom of the pot, layer the crabs, putting garlic powder, parsley, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, etc on each layer.  When the pot is full, pour water down the side of the pot so you don't wash the spices off.  You can serve the juice when the crabs are cooked over linguine.  It is very, very good.  I'm hungry!

Yum, I had to read this at dinner time!  I spent some time in the San Juan Islands and I remember we would just put the crab catcher thingy (is that the official name?) in the water and sure enough we would have crabs later in the day.  You are live in a beautiful part of our country!

When I was a kid I used to go crabbing...hermit crabbing that is:) Seriously when I worked in a restaurant ..I was the seafood cook and we always had fried crabs on the menu during season. I grew up near the Long Island sound and spent my early years fishing with my family.

I love crab meat as well. Those are huge!  So if I hear you correctly, you are bringing salt water from the where you are crabbing home and boiling the crab's in that water?

Geeze when I used to live in PA, Maryland crab season was fantastic, but I barely could swim in that water let alone boil food that I wanted to eat in it....lot's of oil and gas from boats, etc.

Now, I too am starving for some crabs!

Rich - Is that Mrs. Jacobson?  She's pretty.

Karen - Maryland blue crab is about to be a thing of the past....at least in MD and VA.  A month ago we got a bushel for approx. $225.  Last year it was around $180.  I remember back in college when it was about $30 per.   Development and polution is driving the crabs away.  :-(
