I have this almost insatiable thirst for knowledge, even to the extent that sometimes I just might be willing to pay for it. LOL Figure 1 shows the plumbing at a water heater and storage tank at an inspection a few years ago.

Plumbing maze  Figure 1. Plumbing maze

Usually when I find such interesting plumbing mazes, it has something to do with solar heating panels on the roof. Not in this case. Nor was there any evidence of solar heating panels ever having been installed.

When I asked my Clients if they had any specific questions that needed addressing before I got busy inspecting and testing, they said, "Yes. Can you tell us what's going on with the water heater?" That, of course, piqued my curiosity, so we headed out to the water heater. After looking at it for about five minutes and trying to trace pipes and valves, I told my Clients that the only way I would be able to determine anything would be to shut off valves and then run around to see what worked and what didn't, which would probably take more time than they or I had budgeted for. I also told them, jokingly, that the plumber probably got paid by the hour and had a lot of extra copper on hand.

However, I also wanted to know what was going on here, so I offered to pay the $85 service fee to have my plumber come out and tell us what the heck was going on. The final verdict of the plumber was not too far off from my own guess: "I don't think a plumber did this. I think we had a homeowner who didn't know what he was doing." Sometimes, it really is that simple.

Aloha Russel,

Thank you for the great morning laugh.  Are you sure that is a water heater and not modern sculpture.  I would like you permission to add that picture to my collection of humorous pictures that I sometimes use in my mail outs.  Thank you for the article.

Aloha nui loa

Hey Reussel,

I bet you see it all out your way!  I recently sold a home built in the 50's that appeared to have the original water heater....still working but barely. Some of those old heaters were built like Sherman Tanks!

Hey, Folks! Thanks for stopping by!

Carol—I think all dads are capable of such quality work. Reminds me of an old Cosby Show episode where Claire called ahead to the home improvement store and warned them not to sell anything to her husband except the doohickey that he was going down there for.

Bill—Feel free to use the picture.

Vickie—So you're the founder of "The Enquirer," huh?

Rick—Sometimes pictures bring out the child in all of us. I hated that song. LOL

Trey—Hey, good to make contact again after 15 years. Could you manage to send me some chicken fried steak from the Longhorn down there in north Bryan? Hopefully it's still there. And while you're at it, a good deathburger from the Dixie Chicken would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. LOL Gig 'em, Aggies! Whooooooooop!

Kevin—It does look like some of those early DOS screen savers, doesn't it? LOL

Tyrone—Are you laughing at someone's home and their pride of workmanship? Shame on you! Join me in the punishment room because I'm still laughing, too.
