Obviously the world watched in awe as Michael Phelps dove in the pool for the 8th time as part of the mens 400 meter mens medley relay on Sunday August 17th 2008 in Beijing. Victory gave Phelps his 8th Gold medal. The record of 7 gold medals in one Olympic meet held by Mark Spitz since the 1972 Munich Games has now been beaten by a swimmer who was not even born in 1972.

As Americans we celebrate, but as Baltimoreans we are doing back flips.

On Saturday evening more than 10,000 of the 70,585 fans who had been present for the Ravens v's Vikings game at M&T Bank Stadium stayed to watch on the big screen, Phelps swim - and win.

He's a local boy and Maryland is proud.

I wonder if Governor O'Malley will declare August 17th "Michael Phelps Day"?

One of the bright spots in the Olympics.  I would rather watch the swimmers than all the professional athletes combined.  I am from the old school, when the games were about amateurs.   Go Phelps!

Hi,

Your governor should declare Phelps month. What a great family, his Mother and Sisters cheering him on. My family has been glued to the tv just to watch "THE WONDER BOY" your state should be proud. We Americians needed this in a time when all the news we are getting seems bleak just remember Phelps and it makes you want to stand on the mountain and shout  USA USA!!

Congratulations Michael Phelps!! You made us all PROUD!!

Patricia and Tinker. I wonder what the governor will do!

Jim- It's been a great Olmpics so far. That 100 meter butterfly was a little too close for comfort.

Winning eight gold medals is an incredible accomplishment and an honor for Michael Phelps.  He is a wonderful example and a good reminder that anything is possible.
