This morning I read a blog by Desiree Daniels on Google Alerts and how they were useful in staying ahead of the competition.  I had already set up a Google Alert for my name based on another post and plan to follow up with some key word searches.

Then, just a little while ago, I received this email from one of my classmates from the Leadership Orange program I attended.  She is a partner in an advertising and public relations firm which makes her comments doubly cool.

Hi Paddy,
I have set up Google Alerts for anything having to do with Orange County Tourism, and your blog about the Tourism web site was alerted today.
It was really good.
Bringing tourism to our county benefits so many businesses and people. I think it's so important.

Well, it was good seeing your face, even though it was on my computer screen :)
Hope to see you soon, and hope you're enjoying the summer!

Regards,
Name Withheld by Me.

She had no idea I was doing this type of outreach and now she has touched it and may continue to read the blog. Her Google Alert has helped me to increase my readers and SOI.  I love it!

I have set up several Google alerts also, but not sure I am doing them right. I get some alerts that don't seem to have anything to do with what I asked for. Do you have that problem?

Paddy, thanks for the reminder about Google Alerts.  I keep planning to set one up, but then....it hasn't happened yet.  Maybe as soon as I finish this post.

Congrats on your Localism successes.

I love GoogleAlerts!  I use them frequently.

I have them set up for my name but never thought about setting them up for the county I live in.  Good idea.  I have found several places that had my address and phone numbers on them that were wrong and got to correct them oh and there's a baby out there with my name that I get an alert everytime she does anything.  I thought about e-mailing them and letting them know that I am enjoying watching her grow but thought they might get the wrong idea.

They may pick up on a word or your name on a list.  If you keep having trouble I would contact them Fred

Glad this pushed you to set them up Sondra.

Thanks for stopping by Kevin.

I hope you find them useful Shirley

Is your wife the techie in the family Paul?  Thanks for the comment.

There is always too much more stuff to learn Michael

Thanks Dan

I think you were the first one who mentioned them to me Clint but I can't remember exactly who did.  I like this idea of Desiree's of hitting keywords.

That is cool Charlotte You do have a beautiful name.

Glad you got the info on this.  It helps with your security if nothing else Livia and/or Brooke.

Hi Barbara I picked it up from someone else and now have passed it on to others who did not see it where I did.  there are so many things out there one person could never keep up.

Hey Michael It is interesting to look at and it helps keep your name safe.  I am adding my kids to the list this AM.  New way to keep e-tabs.

Good luck with it Marie.

Hi Paddy,

Sounds very interesing and I will be checking into this right away.  I am eager to learn more about the process.  I must admit, I still have a lot of questions.  Maybe this is one to go to Brad.  I bet he has a post somewhere in the file.

Good luck Derenda.  The greatest value is in knowing what else is being done with your name or the keywords you choose to follow.  My example here was that someone else had an alert and found my blog through it.  I thought that was interesting.

I am such a complete technical moron.  I wish I understood what any of this means.  I need to go get some kind of dummy book to help me out.

I am equally clueless.  I just follow the lead of those who know and I will drag you right along with me.  Now go sign up with your name at least so you know when someone is using it out there and then ease into the rest.  Thanks for the comment Becky
