THE LAKE MEAD RECREATIONAL AREA
The Hoover Dam and Lake Mead Recreational Area on the Colorado River borders Arizona and Nevada just 45 minutes from Golden Valley. It is an easy commute north on Hwy 93 from the junction of Hwy 68. River rafting, jet sking, fishing, camping, hiking and touring the dam are just a few of the many attractions that await you when you arrive at this oasis in the desert. Travel a mere 30 minutes beyond the Dam and you will arrive in Las Vegas.
It took five years to build the dam. The contractors were allowed seven years from April 20, 1931, but concrete placement in the dam was completed May 29, 1935, and all features were completed by March 1, 1936. A total of 21,000 men worked on the Dam with an average of 3,500 and a maximum of 5,218 daily, which occurred in June 1934. The average monthly payroll was $500,000.
