Madras, Oregon is getting a huge boost to their local economy. The addition of Deer Ridge Correctional Institution is expected to produce between 400-500 new jobs for this Central Oregon area with an estimated annual payroll of $22 million dollars. The new Jefferson County facility is situated on 200 acres three miles east of Madras  and will house both minimum and medium security inmates. The new men's prison will contain 644 minimum security beds and 1240 medium security beds. Construction is almost complete and the new prison will begin taking inmates in September of 2007.

I hate to see more prisons built; however, your local economy will benefit greatly.

Matt,

No one wants another prison. However, the prison workers union is the largest federal employees union in the US and they do sustain over 600,000 jobs. These new jobs will help the Central Oregon economy immensely, especially Madras. Thanks for your comment : )

Hi, Kelli!

Great blog. I know here in Baker City, our economy definitely benefits from the Powder River Correctional Facility. I know the competition is fierce for prison siting and that Madras won out over several other contenders. Congrats to Madras!

Kelli,

Deer Ridge is not a Federal Prison but a State prison that is represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

Kelli,

DRCI is a state facility not Federal. The correctional professionals are represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Empoyees union.

Hi Kelli,

Crime is a reality. We as a society have a right to make our communities safe. If there were no crime we would not need to build more prisons. I think the addition of this state prison is a good thing because it will generate the new jobs you mentioned and those employees will spend their money back into the local community...which overall, helps the economy.

Just my thoughts...
