Public transportation is always of concern to local government. Recently a fellow agent in Poughkeepsie Carol Culkin wrote about the Metro-North train. In Northern Dutchess we do not have the regular commuter train but we are served by Amtrak from the Rhinecliff Station in the town of Rhinebeck. The trip to Manhattan will take you about 1hr. and 40 mins.
This station is perched on a hill above the Hudson River and does offer a great view of both the river and Catskill Mountains. With an overpass over the rail line you can walk or drive down to the waterfront. It is also located just a few minutes from the recently renovated Rhinecliff Hotel.
Amtrak service is certainly more expensive than that of Metro-North however many commute from here daily to New York City's Penn Station. This station is also used by many New Yorkers to get to their country homes as well as by faculty and students of Bard College. It is also a quick way to take a day trip to Rhinebeck. You might also need to travel further north, the Amtrak can take you all the way to Canada. Here are the four available routes:

JENNIFER, I love seeing these active train stations. We have lots of depots here that have been restored but they are no longer in use as an actual train station. Now we have plenty of freight trains; I'm constantly waiting on trains. In the 11 years of living here I have NEVER seen a passenger train..
