This is an open book visual test.

Use all of your resources to determine which of the following pictures does not belong.

You may consult with your neighbor if that will help, but please make sure that you give your neighbor credit.

You must also tell me why you believe that your choice does not belong with the other three pictures.

Ready?

Picture 2 - Morning glory  Picture 2 - Morning glories

Picture 3 - Rooftop vegetation  Picture 3 - Rooftop vegetation

Scroll down for the answer once you're ready.

Keep scrolling.

I don't want anyone to accidentally see the answer until they are ready.

Just a few more scrolls.

That's one.

That's two.

And three makes "a few."

Here's the answer:

Picture 3 does not belong because, generally, vegetation should not be growing on the roof. Now some might say that Picture 1 does not belong either because cats generally should not be lounging around in potted plants, but Zoey will have none of that.

If you chose the right picture, give yourself an "Attaboy" or "Attagirl." If you also had the correct reason, make a comment and get 25 points! LOL

I thought picture 3 was a new "green" design! Better not go to Carraba's Italian Grill, they have a whole forest on their roofs!

I get an "attagirl" and 25 points I picked #3 because: #1, they are potted plants and #2, I have cats and they LOVE laying in my 2 big potted plants by the front door. Nothing unusual about your #1 picture to me!

So are you saying that vegetation should not be on the roof, I thought mowing was hard.

Dennis—Carraba's Italian Grill got my attention just because I suspect they have Italian food. I shall check out the rooftop while I'm there.

Linda Mae—Attagirl!

Alan—I did say "generally," but I agree about the mowing part. I'm too old to be mowing steep "hillsides" like those anymore! LOL

I think like you. Guess that is why I am an inspector. I figured all the other things were good, that bad. Although I have had cats that used plants as litter so that one is a maybe.

OK, I'll take an attaboy and 25 pts, RR.  Were the rooftop plants by design? If so, they should be in your "What Were They Thinking" series.

The vegetation was growing in a vintage 1970s solar panel. Not too far away is the Tijuana River, which has a lot of cattails growing along its edges, and some of those cattail seeds had found a beautiful home with a view right here. You can see the moisture damage to the roof, and the interior was in similar shape.

Yikes!  Too funny!  I was going to guess that the a/c did this but I see it was the old solar panel.  Solar going GREEN!  Thanks for the laugh!

What did the buyer say when he saw the picture of the cattails growing on the roof? Were they an "upgrade?"

Lara—The seller claimed he didn't know about the vegetation on the roof or the damaged solar panel, but this is San Diego! We have 11 months of sunshine! It's a slab-on-grade foundation, so there's no plumbing in the attic! It's a single-story home! Where did he think all the water was coming from that was soaking the ceiling and wall in his living room. Duh. Do some people simply not have a clue at all? To the seller's credit, he did disclose that the ceiling and walls in the living room were wet. Well, I'll give him another duh on that one: Duh.

Cheryl—Congratulations on your Attagirl. Check to make sure I gave you your 25 points. LOL

I inspected a new condo once and the guy moving in was planning planters on the new EPDM roof. Plus, to get up there you had to climb a ladder from the balcony. It was about 60' up. Some minds are weird. I told him he better check on that one with the powers that be.

Nice pictures. What do we win for guessing the correct answer?

1:08pm • #15

Every respectable home inspector should have a cat to assist with and supervise the reports!

5:11pm • #16

I was thinking that picture 2 didn't belong.  1 has a cat, 3 has cattails, 4 is a picture of outside, which is simply a giant litter box to a cat.

I knew Lela would have to comment on any posting with a cat in it!!

Hey, Lela. Dogs can also help, though. I used to have one that barked "Jingle Bells":

Bark, bark, bark
Bark, bark, bark
Bark, bark, bark, bark, bark

People thought I trained him to do that, but, nope that was just Sugar being Sugar.

In my old age, I want to have both a dog and a cat, but they have to play well together in the same sand box.

Hey, Steve. I am sending you a bill for a new keyboard since your post was directly related to an ASNR—pronounced azz-ner, an acute spontaneous nasal reflex. In this case, orange juice out the nose. Good thing I mostly use voice recognition software. LOL

Hi Russel!  I got impatient trying to figure out the answer so I don't get an "attagirl".....but I enjoyed the pictures and loved the post idea!  Fun!

Have a great day!

Oh, Russel, I'm disappointed that you would include a dog in your idea family.  How could a dog compare to the purrfect creature of a cat?  Now, I realize Steve may disagree with me on this point also.

Ann—I've got some more quizzes, so you'll still be able to get that "attagirl."

Lela—If it has fur, it's welcome in my family. I have lots of fur-niture for all.

First time reader of your blog!  Very informative and enjoyable.

I laughed out loud at picture #3!  I'm guessing the house had bigger problems than cattails growing on the roof!

So, I get an attagirl and 25 points!  What's the prize and how many points do I have to have to win??;-)
