Joan -
The sticky stuff only works long enough for photos. Most things are too heavy for it. It is meant for scrapbooking, so only lightweight items work.
Us a nail or the hercules hooks, as James suggested. If you place it right the first time, it is only a small hole and not difficult to take care of later.
Hi Joan, I use straight pins! Just nail them in at a steep angle and leave no more than 1/4 inch exposed, less if possible. You can hang some relatively heavy stuff this way, and when in doubt I use two. When you remove them NO hole!
We do the same as Karen and use nails, but I intend to buy the thingys that James' suggests. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
We typically DO hang pictures. A home with NO pictures is empty and hollow.
Nail holes are EASY to fix as long as there is paint.

Joan,
I hang pictures as well, but always ask permission before doing so. Framed prints and mirrors make such a difference in the staging - rooms look barren and unfinished without something on the walls.

FYI that hercules hooks can be purchased at Bed Bath and Beyond. haven't used them yet, but they look like they'd work well.
