When Bill Cliton saw Monica Lewinsky, he thought “hmm, I can cross that line, because I am the President!” Obviously, an impeachment trial later and many months of public humiliation, he finally admitted: “Yes, I did have sexual relationship with Monica.”

Well, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Through my life, I have learned that I can’t be all things to all people. If I can be all those things to all people, I will be a very unhappy and tired person. It’s difficult to please everyone! If I followed my parents’ wishes, I would become a doctor and a lawyer and a financial banker, married to some guy, have 2 kids, 1 dog and live at their house. Scary thought, isn’t it??

Similarly, as professionals, we can’t be all things to our clients. As much as I would love to make more money, I can’t paint my clients’ walls, landscape their yards, or power-clean their houses, etc. Why? Sure I can, I can hire couple guys to do it. BUT, are the end results are going to be as good as the jobs done by professionals? By doing everything for clients to “save” them money, is this the best for MY client? No, I think not. My clients hire me to stage their houses well so the listings will sell, not to do all these other things. Ultimately it will be much cheaper and cost effective to have the job done well by professionals who are pros in their fields. That’s why I leave the painting to the painters. They know how to deal with different textures of the wall, and how different types of paint affect the overall effects. Well, I don’t. I just know what color looks good. Application of the color is a total different story. Similarly with landscaping or cleaning, I will never landscape or clean as well as professionals who do this EVERYDAY. I have a black thumb, I have even killed cactus.

As a professional, I intend on doing what’s best for my clients, not what I can do “okay” for my clients. That’s why I am skeptical when I see ads of cleaning companies or furniture companies start offering staging as part of their services.
I also hear this a lot from sellers & agents “I can totally stage the house myself, I watch HGTV.” I also get a lot of calls from agents: “Um, my clients staged their house and it looks terrible. What can you do?” Just because I watch food channel, it doesn’t mean I can do whip out a 8-course meal like Bobby Flay. The professionals who work on these TV shows have a lot of trainings and professional experiences, and that’s why they are good at what they do. True, staging is not rocket science, but there are still some finesse to it.

I completely agree with you, Cindy.  This is like the Realtor who represents the seller, the buyer, and also does the loan!!???  Excuse me.  I just think this is doing a disservice to your clients.  This is why we need to have a close network of service providers who we trust and know can get the job done.  It's all about building relationships.

YUP.  Realtors take courses in specializations to better serve their clients.   I also manage rental property for clients but I don't sell commercial buildings.  I refer that to my collegue who does it everyday, because the nuances are something I am not interested in learning about and he's got it down, saves us money and knows the nuances.

Melissa Yeah that's a scary thought, isn't it? Or mortgage broker who also sells houses? Juggling 2 careers is tough!

Terrylynn That's so true! That's why people are willing to pay more for specialist, not a general person who can do a little bit of everything and not do anything great.

Cheers,

Cindy

Cindy, Your post is so dead on, I often find myself thinking well, I could paint, I could do such and such but IS it the best use of my time and will it be the BEST job?? Not.. God bless,

Cindy it makes a lot of sense not to be a jack of all trades and master of none. Those that learn that leason usually make out pretty well.

Hi Cindy!  Great post and so very true.  I recently lost a bid to a local furniture store that is now staging-I asked the client "are they accessorizing the home too, towels, dishes, bed pillows?? Clients response "We did not ask-thanks for reminding us!".  UGH!!!!

So true Cindy!  Having a professional referral network is so important especially as we grow our businesses and don't have time to do the cleaning, mow the lawn, wash the windows, go shopping, write our blogs, stage houses, feed the dogs, figure out Quickbooks, work on proposals, answer client emails, send out cards, pay our bills, destage our houses, keep up with the all the latest social networking opportunities, repair the broken lamp, do more shopping, present at a real estate office, write our consultations, network at 7am in the morning (whoever started that trend has GOT to get a life!), organize the warehouse, paint the walls, trim the trees, AND go shopping some more...

FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS!

Cindy,

I love this post!  These staging shows on TV that DO IT ALL for $2000. or less, paint, landscape, clean, pack, change the flooring, install granite countertops and on and on give sellers and some REA the impression that we can do that too!  Talk about unrealistic...I've had sellers say to me, "Well they can do it on HGTV for that!"

MY OH MY!

Gail Thanks! I hear that all the time too :/

Mary You said it sister! There are so much that goes into running a business, yet it amazes me every time I talk to doey-eyed people who are talking about opening their own businesses. We all get shocked when we start to work on our businesses that how much there are to do!

Cathy It's THEIR loss, not yours ;) I think they may regret that. From my expereiences, I think furniture store tends to cram too much furniture in because a) they are used to do that in showrooms b) they want to sell more furniture...

Bill That's SO TRUE, isn't it? I find that having a niche then grow it's easier to expand into a new niche then just trying to break into everything all at once.

Cheers,

Cindy

Your head line caught my eye, I say that a hundred times a day to my kids, well for different reasons. Isn't there a saying that goes" If your a jack of all trades you'll never be a master of one" or something to that effect...

I hear you sistah!! My husband is always asking me why I don't just paint my client's house myself...Because I want it to look good! It seems everyone is adding staging to their resume lately. Professional organizers are now home stagers just like the painters and cleaners.

Well, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Very fitting and I agree - now I just have to keep repeating it over and over............

As a Home Staging Consultant I agree with you on your post. You can not do it all, you need out side contractors to do the work you or I or the client can not do & are not listened to do such as (plumbing, electrical, carpentry to pull building permits to move walls.

That is why when a client is looking for a Good Stager, or Good Staging Consultant they should ask if they have contractors they use and can recommend. Then if the client is smart they should go to the BBB to see if the contractors you use are legit.

I also agree Staging is Not brain surgery! But with the right coaching from a Professional who has years of experience getting homes in selling condition and Staging, the average home seller can do a  pretty Damn good job Staging if they follow the DIY blueprint a Home Stager or Staging Consultant puts together for them. I was just reading a great post here about when the client listens, and the Stager here posted the great B&A pictures of the rooms the clients did on her own.

I think alot of Stagers here don't agree with me about how the client can save alot of money and Stage their own home with some help from a Professional. But the truth is they can.... and it is my job as a Home Staging Consultant to let them know they can do the job their self if they don't have the budget to hire a Stager to do all the work for them.

Anyway Good Post,

Best Wishes

BB
