How 13 SEER Effects You
The Department of Energy (DOE) measures efficiency in numbers called SEER ratings (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). For several years, the minimum efficiency standard for newly-manufactured HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) equipment had been 10 SEER. As of January 23, 2006, the law requires manufacturers to stop producing anything less than a 13 SEER.

For consumers this means that:
* New air conditioners manufactured after that date will be more energy-efficient and save money.
* Existing air conditioners are not affected and homeowners do not have to replace them.
