Yesterday there was a REALTOR® from another office chatting with us about the market and his level of business. Certainly all of us need to vent once in awhile and it is easy to do that with people in the same industry. BUT...there is a difference between venting and being negatively destructive. In less than 15 minutes his negativity spread like a cloud and others got drawn into his storm.

What was interesting to me was that some of the whining was about BPO's he was asked to do and how it wasn't worth the gas to go do them. That one always gets me...this same agent is thinking about picking up a part time job to supplement his income and yet won't do a BPO which will help sharpen his real estate skills, pay him far more than the $10 bucks an hour he will likely be paid in another job and keep him working in his chosen field.

Instead of all the barking WHAT IF we all started wagging a bit more and look at what we can GAIN in this current market?

#1 complaint of (some) real estate agents when it is busy: THEY HAVE NO TIME. So now we have time and have GAINED:

  • Time to "sharpen the saw" and take those real estate classes we cram in when it is busy. Do you really know the new agency changes?
  • Time to cull through our database and get our clients organized and perhaps even connect with them again. If you aren't I guarantee a "wagging agent" is likely contacting them right now.
  • Time to update our marketing pieces and listing presentations. Are you REALLY using all the tools and resources your franchise or NAR provides us?
  • Time to familiarize yourself with new developments and create a new farm area. Are you doing the same ole' and getting the same ole'. Change it up.
  • Time to dig into the technology and online tools that you say you don't understand or have the time for and use the NEW tools that are replacing all your old ones. Like blogging, and video, and social media and websites...

Our office dog, Ginger reminds me to be positive every day. Every person who comes into the office is welcomed with plenty of wagging--she expects the best and with that approach always gets it-- from visitors and co-workers alike (and sometimes even a biscuit!)

I advise my Clients to always be Pleasant, Positive, Personable, and Professional because I believe that the four P's will lead to a fifth: Profit.

There's a trade association message board where I used to hang out, but it's become so negative the last few months that I had to find a more positive environment. Ergo, ActiveRain.

I agree 100%.  We all need to remain positive!  It is very easy to look at the negatives.  But, believe me, many of us in this industry are more fortunate than others if we stop and think about it!

I say let em' bark. My standard response to anyone who asks me how is my market is an emphatic "FANTASTIC"......and it is.

I am always a positive person, but I don't stretch the truth either. I have a friend who is so positive, she becomes negative in her actions and behavior. Irrates the rest of us who are normal.

The glass is half empty fo me, but that is not a negative thing for me, just a fact. But doesn't mean I don't smile and know one day soon, my Prince Charming will come and deliver 10 mortgages to my feet. I know he will!!!!

HMMM. If i was the broker in charge of your office I would have asked him to leave. You are what you surround yourself as.

You have to re-invent yourself in this business, I look at what works and didn't work at the end of each month. Winners hang around winners, yes the market is bad but there are ways to get your point across about a depressed market without sounding negative.

Sean I agree with you. The same thing happens in the mortgage business as well. There are a lot of opportunities and those who spend their time focusing on how BAD things are will not be taking advantage of them. I have a fellow loan officer who is the same way and I make it a point to avoid contact with her because negativity spreads very quickly.

I like positive people and try to leave the room when it gets negative and there sure is a lot of that going on --- I love the 5 P's that Russell talked about above!  Very good!

You have an office dog? I am jealous. You should have included her picture in your post.

I am not getting much in the way of business right now but am overwhelmed with the amount of work that I have before me. I am finding so many things in my business that could stand improvement -- in a way, I'm grateful that I have fewer clients allowing me to get these things done -- but I'm still overwhelmed and wish I had some help to get the work done. ~ Evelyn

I do BPOs...I have to say it's been quite noticeable that as our gas costs skyrocket, there has been absolutely no recognition of this on the part of BPO companies.  What they pay us has not gone up a penny.  So from that perspective, I can understand why it seems less worth the effort.  However, you're right, it's usually better than a $10/hour job.
