Sweet Vindication for a Selfish Active Rain Parasite

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty

I took a bit of a beating from some folks for my post Confessions of an Active Rain Parasite but I also received a lot of thought provoking and insightful comments.  The gist of many comments was either "Get over yourself" or "Don't be so selfish". See sample comments below.

You can pretty much ignore #1 because I think it is from my MOM.  She is the only one that calls me Allie.   The rest are from real AR members.

#1 - "Allie - You are dumb and lazy and you will never amount to anything".

#2  - "Good grief guys if you are that paranoid then I bet you are constantly looking over your shoulder. "

#3 - "I have a feeling that even if you would post some of your "secret" recipes, very few people would copy them"

#4 - "don't be selfish"

#5 - "Well, first, the flea isn't a parasite"
HA!! That is where you are wrong Mr. Commenter #5! It is too.  Click Here for proof:  Everyone knows that fleas are parasites

Ok, I may not think I am selfish but I am a bit of a vindictive baby.

Anyway, back to (sort of) vindication.  Below is a comment I received today on the aforementioned post from a very nice, and very honest, local agent.  I edited it down but you can click here to see the full comment.  I also received a few private emails about this post from local agents.

Al -  I have been following you from your start even before AR blogs and have admired the big splash you made in Ridgewood coming in from a different profession.  Reviewing your websites I have tried to copy a couple of things you do but have not had the success you have had, that is for sure. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery! - Jim

For the record, I would be happy to share info with James.  My point here is not that this proves that I shouldn't share info on AR.  I listened to the feedback of some great agents and bloggers and have decided it does make sense to share and I will share everything I can.  However, if you think your competitors do not follow what you do, and then try to emulate it, you are kidding yourself.  I don't think being aware of this and pointing it out means I am selfish.  I just think it means I am honest about some of my reservations.

Psst #5 - This email is a bit tongue in cheek.  I really love ya Man.

Kathleen - Thanks for your note.  Maybe I will stop responding to comments when I have actually written a great post.  Since I haven't come close, I still think it makes sense to respond to anyone, and everyone, who takes the time to read my nonsense.

You actually know Bill "The Thrill" Gassett?  The "Dean of Hopinkton Real Estate"?  I am a big fan.

I don't know Bill and Chet but I think the smart money is with Bill Gassett and online marketing and blogging - as opposed to postcards.  Or is that the same Bill?

I thought it was a great blog. I think were all hesitant to give away our best ideas.  Even though they are presumed to be copyrighted(based on a nother post i read) Unless you enforce it people will definetly copy it in which case your great idea(s) become diluted and therefore less effective and unique!

Garren - Thanks very much.  I agree with you but I am not sure "all" people have this hesitation.  Some folks on AR have filmed their actual listing presentations and posted them on AR.  And the one agent I am thinking of is a top agent with a great presentation so obviously she has no hesitations.  Even though I am happy to share now, I don't think I could bring myself to post my listing presentation yet.  Not that it is so great but I am just not there...yet.

Al, Al, Al...do vindictive...so bitter...Lenza and Paul ganging up on you? (tounge and cheek for those that miss my intentions here).

You know I had a real estate agent, who is a member of my local MLS, who called me wanting to know when I was going to run my market reports...Hmmm...Hello, you have the same data, run your own, but I told him it would be a couple of weeks since I was heading on vacation.  Have to say I thought it was odd that he didn't run his own. It is the challenge of being web 2.0.

Sheesh, my listing presentation would make a horrible video.  I'm very instinctual and so I flex my presentation based on how the sellers are responding. Not sure I could share that.

What happened? Caffeteria fight? What is this, high school? LOL. Oh, well, I've gotten some nasty coments at times and I figure those people must've gotten up on the wrong side of the bed that day. Big deal! And for the ones that want to copy you, take it as a compliment.

Here is a great example of how you can indirectly inspire people (referring to your other post...yes, that one) on Active Rain.  You gave me a great blogging topic for many towns...famous people that have or currently live there.  For instance, Anne Arundel County is my area and Pat Sajak lives full-time in AA Co. (except when he is out west filming Wheel).

So thanks for the inspiration!

Oops, I meant to leave that on your Favre post...I clicked it and it opened in a new window, which I closed and accidently commented here.

AL - I think that you hit on the most important part of your dilemma in this post.  Your competitors may very well read what you write, and even try to copy it.  The thing is, there is only one Aloysius Donohue (probably because it's so hard to spell :-) ), and no matter how much people try, they cannot duplicate the original.  In fact, in this very post, you are supporting someone that is nothing more than a weak imitator.  Since I don't want to call anyone out by name, feel free to contact me to help you solve this riddle.

I have had a couple of agents call me and offer to pay me to create a website for them that is like mine.  I wouldn't mind helping them, or teaching them how they can do it, but I'm in the real estate business...maybe I should go into building websites.....?????

Al as I have already mentioned I like to share but I can understand your concern. There is a fine line between what you should give away and what you shouldn't. In a platform like this if you are on it enough your competition will probably find out about it anyway.

"Al, Al, Al...so vindictive...so bitter"

My Young, Naïve Little Melina - If you had the wisdom of my years you would realize you should judge people by their own standards - not yours.

Many folks (like me) are incapable of writing the heady, cerebral posts that you often do - like the great "Micromanagers for Microbreweries" which garnered so much acclaim.  Or my personal favorite Open House Sunday July 27, 2008 in Salem Oregon.   This one stands above all Open House Literature as a true classic.

So while you effortlessly churn out classic pieces, I struggle with bitter rants.  Does that make you better than me?  Maybe it does.  But do you need to remind me of it every minute of everyday?  I think not!

Meli – It was not really a cafeteria fight.  More of a spirited conversation.   You definitely have the right attitude.  Good for you.

Adam - Thanks for calling me tonight to explain this cryptic comment.  I was racking my brain trying to figure out what you were talking about.  Now it makes perfect sense.  It was great talking to you and I hope the NJ Attorney Review stuff made sense.  If not, give me a call, I would be happy to help your friend any way I can.

I can't believe that I've been on AR this long and never came across your blogs before now.  I so totally understand the angst.

I've been debating with myself (that gets a little loud and scary at times) about putting my "listing presentation" of sorts on my outside blog and on my website for sellers to see, simply because I don't want my competitors to see it and say the same things.  I know they couldn't actually IMPLEMENT what I do but I know that they could easily SAY it...kwim?

~sigh!~

Karen - Yes, you will find more that a few servings of angst here.  Who won the debate?

I hear you and I am not sure I would post the full presentation but maybe start by posting some tips from it.

Yes, I kwym assumming kwim means what i think it means. If not, then no, I don't kwym.  Kwim?
