Amendment 5 Still On The November Ballot In Florida

Amendment 5 is still on the November ballot in Florida. While a lower court wanted it removed, the state appealed and until the Supreme Court decides, it will remain on the ballot - regardless of what the media may be inaccurately reporting!

The Florida Supreme Court will have oral arguments on this topic on September 8th in Tallahassee - we will see what they decide.

Many are saying that this is the way to go - lower property taxes by 25% to 40% through Amendment 5 - BUT WHAT IS THE COST???????????????? PUBLIC EDUCATION - AGAIN!!!!!!!!! IT SHOULD BE THE LAST THING to be touched!!!! Our students are the future of the state and nation! Already the counties are having problems with education budget cuts - teachers are leaving the state in record numbers because of the cuts!!! Pay freezes, increased classroom size, reducing elective classes - is this what we want for our schools???????????

Here in Florida we pay less taxes than most states in our nation! We have no state income tax and still we complain about each and every tax increase!!! Folks, this is not the 50's anymore, where everyone comes to Florida to live cheap because everything, including taxes, are well below the national average - this is the 21st Century and Florida's taxes have increased and finally caught up to the rest of the nation! If you were living in Europe, you would be paying a heck of a lot more on ALL of your taxes!

Having schools funded on your homeowner taxes is the only way we are going to get the money we need for our schools. If anything, we should ADD a 1 cent state sales tax that would ALSO go specifically toward funding public education!!!!

I grew up here in the Tampa Bay Area and half of my education was in private schools - my folks still paid taxes toward funding the public school system! As a former teacher, I am appalled at the thought that people are so against paying for educating each and every student in our state! It is one of the rights of each and every individual - the right for an education - and it is the duty of all citizens and residents to fund it in their taxes.

That is my opinion, for what it is worth and I would love to hear what you have to say!!!!!

I do not think that Amendment 5 is the solution

we should lower property taxes for ALL homeowners. Here in our area we have a lot of second homes and these people need a break too. I am absolutely for  adding to the sales tax, as much as 3 cents to compensate for the lower property taxes.

I agree - Amendment 5 is not the answer. Unfortunately, the language on the ballot is packaged very attractively, and most people will not comprehend what the tax "savings" true implication is. I hope we can educate more FL residents to do research on this amendment.

Anne - Floridians are used to having low taxes and go up the wall when reality kicks in - we can't have increased student populations and not increase funding for schools - the math just does not work!

Carol - You are right, most people don't get what the cost will be!

Barbara- Personally I homeschool and never thought it was fair that I have to pay for public schools because I choose not to use them. But then again, it is my choice. I also don't think it is fair that all the people renting and send their kids to public school don't have to pay taxes.

I think the school district does not know how to handle money. They don't pay teachers and don't spend $ on the kids, they make the parents pay for everything for school including school books, and then they pay the superindendant some outragious salary. I think you get a mom who knows how to live on a budget in the school districts and you will see how you can cut the wasteful spending way down and give the teachers the money they deserve.
The first thing to get rid of is the union.

I just met with a mom we are doing a short sale on who is a teacher, and the union does NOT take care of the teachers, again, only themselves.

Katerina- What we pay in this country for taxes is minimal! My opinion is that if you choose not to use the public school system, that is your option. You still need to pay into the collective pot, as do people with no children - it is a social obligation. My children were in private school for several years when we first moved to this country - we still paid school taxes for the public school system.

I do feel that there should be a special tax for renters to contribute to this collective pot. It is NOT a matter of money being spent in wrong areas - I have never heard of parents paying for textbooks unless the child lost or damaged the book. Books in all counties in this area are used without any cost to the parent. As the person in charge of ordering textbooks for the school I taught in for 12 years here in Pinellas County, I know how expensive those books are! They are paid for by the textbook funds from the county, not by parents.

That the superintendents get paid too much is something I do agree with. But the unions lost the right to do much good when they gave up the right to strike years ago here in Florida. I was not a member of the union for most of the years I taught simply because the unions have minimal power in this state.

I do strongly feel that an additional sales tax should be added specifically for education. You get what you pay for. People tend to want 'it all' and want to pay for nothing - it does not work that way. Our students are the future !!!!! We need to remember that!~
