Multnomah FallsIt’s just another rainy day. Not even fish rain, but you might think so with all the umbrellas clouding up the sky. Tourists on their maiden voyage. They flare up like neon in the Oregon rain. We love them. We really do. And they were everywhere this morning with their umbrellas sailing high along the footpaths and hiking trails at Multnomah Falls.

But it didn’t start out that way. I awoke to the drumming pelt of rain at an unreasonable hour and felt such a ridiculously strong pull to hike up the Wahkeena trail that it seemed to me as if gravity was playing an ornery little trick. I set out with a solitary vision of me and the trees and the pungent smell of the mossy spray. At first it seemed as if I’d have my perfect morning. My Hat

I tucked my hat into the crook of a tree to retrieve on my way back down, knowing it would be safe and waiting for me. How lovely it was with no people in sight and only the soft Oregon rain for company.

My boots got wet and before long, my pants were soaked through. It was glorious. Exhilarating. And suddenly, … crowded. Umbrellas sprouting everywhere like gardenias at moonrise. All these visitors who don’t understand the old cliché, When In Rome.

Lose the umbrella people. We don’t use them – we don’t need them.

After spending the past several weeks working with buyers who plan to relocate here, it occured to me that they, too, need to lose their umbrellas. Things are different here in Oregon. While sales have slowed a bit, overall, purchasing real estate here is still an excellent investment. That’s a fact worth staking your bank balance upon. And yet, my buyers have all expressed one reservation after another about the unlikely prospect of getting wet in this market. Each has found the perfect home and yet instead of throwing off their galoshes, they’ve gone inside to wait out the storm.

Well here’s a friendly little weather report for those looking to relocate to my beautiful Pdx:  It’s just a little drizzle.

Real estate is not a short-term investment. Now IS the perfect time to buy. Don’t let a little precipitation cause you to throw up an umbrella that will only obscure your long-range view. After all, real estate is a big picture investment. When you find your perfect home – buy it. You won’t regret it.

It’s always possible to go back and reconsider the path not taken. But what you might find is a lost opportunity. So when you come to Oregon, leave your umbrella behind.... come play in the rain.

If you’re considering relocating to our beautiful Pdx, I’ll be happy to provide you with all of your real estate and relocation needs to support you and your family with your transition into Portland.

Jennifer, as someone who does not even own an umbrella, I loved this post!  Most of us are not so sweet that we will melt when it rains!

I agree Jennifer! I had a very wealthy man tell me once, If you watch what the masses do and do the opposite you will make a lot of money. In other words buy now, not many are. I love the leave your umbrella behind analogy.

Jennifer, it is amazing how people relocating want to create the same experience in a new location, whether it be the same house, same dance studio, church etc... Every area is different, you're here, experience the difference.

Jennifer,
Those that wait out the storm will miss the rainbow of opportunity.  Come on buyers, it's time to get wet.

God's tears have a way of cleansing our souls.  Wonderfully written, my beautiful soul.

Prospective buyers have to realize a few things these days.  The inventory is out there, in abundance.  The money, still cheap.  While lending guidelines have become stricter and the the process isn't nearly as streamlined as it should be, there is opportunity beyond that waterfall:-)

You've heard it before, but here you go... My Dear.

My Jen - Real Estate is not a short term investment. I think too many have forgotten this fact.

Never use an umbrella myself, for I think it just slows me down.

Jen, How beautiful.  I felt like I was there with you.  This post is so true.  My husband I were discussing this subject the other night.  I worry about the "investment" part of the real estate for my clients - although I know it is a great investment in the long run- we have to remember that it is a place for respite, love, family and a tax deduction!  It is so many things other than just an investment.

PS, I always lose my umbrellas.

Jennifer, your eloquence leaves me speechless.  This was beautifully put together.  And so on target.  I have a client who relocated there many years ago.  He visited on vacation and thought that it was the most beautiful place he'd ever been.  He went back and built a house there.

Jennifer, this is so wonderful, what beauty, it deserves a feature. What's wrong with the East

coast kid, doesn't he like to walk in the rain?

Patricia... I'm quite certain that I'm more inclined to melt in the heat. So what if I spend half my life walking around with mascara drizzling down my cheeks and sloppy hair?

I say "Goodbye" to unsightly umbrellas and "Hello" to smudgy smiles. If it's raining, then I'm happy!

Cynthia... I know 'someone' who will likely catch that rainbow reference and make something of it. Simply because in this context (as with so many others...), it couldn't be more true! It goes along with the quote Greg included. This really IS a wonderful opportunity to land grab while the market is 'resting'.

My Jason... I think you know I caught that ;-) It's been so long...

In every respect you are exactly right. Money is still cheap and the inventory makes shopping that much more fun. One way or another, we need to focus on this single message and change the skewed perception of the buying public.

Finally,... thank you. You know what that means to me and how much I needed to hear it again :-) Every word is true.

Susan... I'm with Sardiboy - if I ever go live you will be my plant! Thank you so much.

Oregon is a fantastically beautiful place. I took the above pictures with my cell phone and even that can't dampen the beauty of this region. The best part is that Multnomah Falls is just minutes down the freeway from the center of the city. Where else can you get that?

So if your wise friend ever decides to sell, remember that you know a wonderful broker in Pdx who would love to help him get the best price for his home!

Aunt Brenda... As a matter of fact, he LOVES walking in the rain. And singing in it too :) But I think he's trying to make an East coast girl out of me. And he's very persuasive I might add.

That is such a kind thing for you to say and I want you to know you just made my day! A big, big hug for you!!

I came here yesterday and even told someone to come look at the waterfall... and forgot to comment.....(short attention span :)

You always do great wonders expressing what you're going through to have your reader right there with you. This by far exceeds the last and the one before that.

Seems that mindset was caused by the grand old media telling everyone that they need to wait it out. If they are finding the 'home for them' and keep waiting....they're taking a risk of losing it.

You're right Jen...leave the umbrella's behind....and sing in the rain!

I always adhere to the "When in Rome" concept and you live in such an incredible part of the world but "fish rain"? Hmmm...I still think y'all tell the rest of the world that it rains constantly to keep us all from moving there. We tried something like that in Austin (warning of the HEAT) but they still arrive in droves every day...

Oh, and I am with you! Umbrellas are to bulky to carry when running or whatever catches your fancy at the time! Thanks for posting, I like to stop by your blog and see what's new, it's like having an ice cream cone in the middle of the day! Thanks!

Sally... I must admit, we do have beautiful waterfalls here, but I doubt they measure up to what you have in Hawaii. Still... it is gorgeous here. I'd love to be upbeat all the time, but that would be a lie. I've had a rough summer and it's bound to reflect in my writing. With all the crap raining down on me lately, I probably should carry an umbrella - but I never will!!

MWA!

Russell... Thanks!! But the truth is that it really DOES rain here that much. We get accused of underrepresenting it, if anything. Fish rain is when it rains so much even the fish can live on land.

Someone was telling me just the other night that I should move to Austin. But as attractive as that option may be - I think the heat would make me crazy. Besides, I just can't stand A/C. But re-position Austin to Northern California (you know, like a professional sports team) and I'm there!!

Enjoy an ice cream for me too!

Jennifer Thanks for the definition and I finally believe it rains that much because the area is so incredibly beautiful! You are also correct that it is way hot here for several months (including today) so I am heading to Amy's for some ice cream right after i finish this comment!

Oh and as far as your earlier comment about using an umbrella to shelter you from the "raining down on me lately, I probably should carry an umbrella" We have another of the many Texas sayings "Sometimes the BS gets so deep, it takes wings to stay above it". So if it's piling up just grow some wings and maybe if you look you realize you already have them!

Onward through the FOG!

Jennifer, That water fall is beautiful!!! That's something we don;t have in flat Florida. WE do have rain though. Lot's of it. And I have never owned an umbrella. I love walking in the rain. It's cleansing, outward and and inward.

Jennifer,
Great analogy, great post! Couldn't agree with you more, on both fronts. Granted, over here on the dry side, umbrellas are the things you use to shade your deck furniture. I look forward to future posts...

BB... I happen to love the hard Florida downpours and really miss them. I lived in Sarasota and Tampa for awhile way back when. I love it there, but would miss the mountains. Rain is the perfect tonic for so many things. It has the power to transport me.

Pdx is short for Portland. It's our airport designation, but we've heisted it as the nickname for our city. I shouldn't say WE, since I think it happened long before I happened on the scene.

About that waterfall... there are dozens almost as lovely all along the old historic highway. As I mentioned above, this is right here on the edge of Portland along the Columbia River.  Stunningly beautiful topography. I hope you come up some day. I'd love to show you and your Lovely Wife what Oregon has to offer.

Lisa... Isn't is crazy how a mere 2 hours makes such a difference in climate? I absolutely love the Bend area and there is no shortage of beauty over there. I think of lava rock, mule deer and more dazzling stars than I'll ever see in our hazy night sky. I'm glad you stopped by, and next time you're on my side of the mountain, I hope you'll give me a ring!!

Kathy... Thank you. It often surprises me how much I think about real estate within the context of other things. So much is about the psychology behind why people do the things they do - individually and as a group. So in truth, it seems rather natural to me. Thanks so much for stopping by!

Update. Since this post our city has been doused. RAIN RAIN RAIN. I had water pouring in through roof pipes. Water in the basement. Water in the top floor. We had hurricane force winds two days ago. I'm beginning to wonder about karma. And still. now umbrella was used in during the inclement conditions. I had no idea hail (the smallish kind) felt so cool and invigorating.
