Have you ever wondered about other 'medical' alternatives than just a regular doctor for something like a thrown out back? And if that didn't work have you considered going to a chiropractor? If that doesn't work, then what?

My husband has something pinched in his back /leg and he went to the doctor. He basically got the "I'll give you a prescription" answer and he told them to 'take a hike' (he used other words). Then he went to a Chiropractorand after four weeks of pain, continuing pain and just a bunch of cracks and more pain I told him that we both should look in to acupuncture.

Why? Well, with all my ailments (too many to list here) I can't have people stretching and cracking and pulling and tugging and Gary certainly needs relief at this point.

I went to my Acupuncture appointment this morning. My first experience.

Ahhh.....Massage....oh, yeah (I can sure get to like this). More pressure rubbing (I like this). Then, warmth (lights?) and little taps on needlesgoing in different spots throughout my back, legs and down to my ankle (for my pinched something that is causing my toes to go numb).

Then rubbing my left arm down to my wrist(for carpal tunnel and thumb tendinitis) with massage, pressure and needles.

I'll tell you this: When all was finished (one hour) I was lightheaded and had to sit up for a good 15 minutes before leaving. The pain from my back lessened. My left foot had feeling and barely any pain with feeling starting to come back into my three toes. My wrist and thumb need more work but he said I was babying it (doctors orders) and we needed to get strength back into it.

So...what do cheeseballs have to do with anything? NOTHING...not a darn thing. But they sure tasted good!

* Acupuncture is the stimulation of acupuncture points on the body to promote balance of the Yin & Yang in the body. (with needles, finger pressure, heat, electricity etc.) Yin & Yang are the fundamental theories behind Chinese medicine, art, government, science etc.Acupuncture can help in virtually any illness, emergency or chronic. It can be helpful for muscular pain/dysfunction, hormonal problems, respiratory ailments, digestive disorders, stress, circulatory, neurological. You are so cute.  I am going to do accupuncture.  I want to do it, did the needles hurt?  If there is massage with it, I'm in!!

Sally - I have studied alternative medicines for over 15 years and know quite a bit about them. What do you think people did before there were doctors? Great post!

Audrey: I've lived with pain for so long but the foot thing was scaring me. I'll keep you all up to date for tomorrow is Gary's appointment :)

Robert: Of course! One thing is for certain....I put my trust in ONLY doctors for so long and after finally trying (my aunt used to go) it I am convinced.

Sally- Hope this helps both of you.....so many times we're afraid to try something "different" not in our comfort zone, but as Robert said...what did people do before traditional medicine?  Are we supposed to guess what to do with the Cheese Balls....do you have a Mouse LOL :)  Give me an hour or so and I'll find one ......

I tried acupuncture once - little pins in my earlobes to help me lost weight - I think I lost a few pounds - I was 20 years old - wanted to fit into a size 5 bridesmaid dress that the bride ordered for all 4 of us.  I was kind of a cheeseball. :)

HAHAHAHAAHAHAA!!!!!!!!!!!  I couldn't stop laughing at that.

I believe very strongly in alternative and Eastern medicine.  Devils claw works great for back pain.

I've had a sciatic nerve problem in my lower back for years and it pops in and out but one time I almost went to get acupuncture but never made it to the needles although my athletes do it instead of meds. I just try to deep stretch it put. I just strained it today and was stretching as I read this.

Sally my Dad had almost lost the use of one of his legs, and then he decided to go for acupuncture, he could not believe the improvement.  I did not believe in it before then, but I believe in it now.

Sally, I had a really gifted chairopracotr who had the nerve to retire and move to Sante Fe.  And now I'm stiffening up again.  Maybe I'll go out for a little visit.

Sally, I used to do acupuncture few years ago. You have to keep at them and attend your scheduled appointments if you really want to see a great result. Best wishes with the rest of your treatments.

Virginia: lol. Everyone is a cheeseball sometimes :)

Jessica: I'd never heard of devils claw...then again I never delved into anything but conventional medicine either. Anyway, I went to read and it is all over the place! One thing I did read...a certain type they distribute for osteoarthritis (which I have) has serious side effects .......Some herbal/diet supplement products have been found to contain possibly harmful impurities/additives. It did say that it is used for other stuff too ...like loss of appetite and indigestion. Hmm....maybe you get the munchies after LOL!

Sally, A number of years ago I had acupuncture and massage on a regular basis and I loved the relief from pain it afforded me. All these years later as I sit IN PAIN in this chair, your post reminded me of how it helped. I hope I can find someone here in this small community.

The cheese balls look yummy! ( it's not too far to the little store)

LOL at the cheeseballs. I've inserted similar pictures with the same reasoning into my own posts. And I have yet to try acupuncture. And I enjoy massages, but it's so hard to find a good massage therapist, so I end up not going at all.

Woo Hoo, Love the cheesballs. As for acupuncture, I guess it matters a lot who is doing it. My experience on this one is not so clear but I have tried it and have no recommendation, LOL. If it helps, it does, if it doesn't maybe the chi is in the cheesballs perhaps,LOL.

Sally -  I'm so happy that acupuncture relieved your pain.  I am a virtual office manager for an acupuncturist and I have learned so much from being around and learning about the practice.  I've been with him for 1.5 years now and RARELY see my Western doctors anymore except for check-ups.  I take no prescription drugs either.

Linda: It's well worth it....my foot and toes have not had relief for many months and I kept putting it off....then finally when I went to the doctor she didn't do or say a darn thing. Now with my husband out of commission I needed to do something quick so he can get back in the kitchen LOL! Hope you find one.....it does relieve pain!

I am glad that this is bringing you relief.  My cousin's daughter went for acupuncture to bring on labor when she was overdue and they were threatening a c section. she was in labor two hours after the visit.  Love the cheese balls, BTW.  Have a great day.

There is a place in Windsor Canada that offers accupuncture for smoking cessation.  Heck, I've tried darned near everything else, I think I'm going to give this a try in the fall.

Thanks for letting me know your experience.

Sally, I advise golf and drinking plenty of beer.  Goes well with the cheeseballs.  In fact, you can just leave off the golf and the cheeseballs.

Sally, Over the years I have used many, many different holistic approaches to alternative health, mostly with positive results.  Acupuncture works for many things and you'll know relatively quickly if you're a candidate for it....and Amma Therapy, a form of massage is terrific.

mmmmmmSally I went to Zippy's!   OMG are the napples ever SICK.  I had a coconut one and I can't wait to try the apple.  I didn't expect them to be warm like that!

There were lineups.... might have to wait another month before I go again.

Oh...we had some kind of massage (pressure point stuff) and then heat lamp and then the acupuncture...I tell you what I know we looked like porcupines! I'm happy with the little bit of results I got so far...so is Gary. Oh, yeah.

Georgina: You're too funny! The apple napples are to die for!  I love them...you gotta try the blueberry cream cheese ones too....yum!

Sally I have used alternative medicine for some time now.  I don't like doctors.  Won't go unless I am bleeding or can't breathe.  Oh but that is another blog.  Yep, alternative medicine works for me.  I have been in remission for three years now without any meds or treatments.  I could hardly walk I was so ill and a medical doctor told me I would not get better.  I live a very full and active live now.

Hi Sally-we as a household practice alternative medicine.  I am not one to run to the doctor or take antibiotics every time you turn around.  I go through periods where I am stiff on my entire left side.  An ankle injury from many years ago..massage always works best for me, acupuncture as well.

We also take chinese herbs and see a chinese herbal doctor.    I removed a mole recently on my forehead...with apple cider vinegar..imagine that but it worked!  Its interesting because I would like to study herbal medicine and actually become a master.  At some point I will start that education but it is a very long process.

I've had a few severe ailments..and herbal medicine worked for these problems.  The computer scientists has an ailment and the herbal doctor helps him to live with it easier.

I use doctors when it is absolutely necessary.

Hi Sally,

Keep us posted on Gary, now I'm very curious about acupuncture. My hubby has been struggling with his back for years, this might be worth a try. I heard many athletes in the Olympics use this type of treatment. I like the idea of the message myself, but a little tired of the needles if you know what I mean. :)

Sally- We only go to our medical doctor once a year, and of course I get my pap smear. But even our medical doctor is a natural doctor. He got my daughter off of horrible bipolar drugs and treated her with diet. We go to a homeopathic doctor, a chiropractor, an acupuncture doctor and a massage therapist.

We take herbs and all natural remedies.

And we now use EFT which is just like acupuncture except no needles and you can do it yourself. You can learn it for free. Amazing results.

I don't even take aspirin or pain relievers. Good luck and I know it will work! Also, you are what you eat. We learned so much about what foods to eat and not eat from our homeopathic doctor.

Hi Sally,

I am an Alternative Medicine major in my senior year despite being a Realtor and like you and your husband, I was fed up with doctors and not getting anywhere. I chose this field to help me after gaining 24 lbs in less than two weeks (a prescribed drug really messed up my thyroid as a side effect). I was ever since fascinated with natural medicine and learned that various modalities in alternative medicine can really help an individual get back to health by simply learning how to follow a healthy lifestyle. Acupuncture has helped me deal with my lower back pain. I go to the appt. and get immediate results rather than taking pain medication or muscle relaxers.
