Have you seen these billboards popping up around Portland? I've seen a few, along with several bus stop benches that read the same, scattered around town. This particular one caught my eye as I was out and about today delivering credit hour certificates to Realtors that attended our class last week. (I have edited out the company name, logo and phone number)

This billboard is located about 500 yards from the entrance to the new South Waterfront and River Blocks development. 38 prime acres where hundreds of condos, several restaurants, a theater, a museum, Portland's Aerial TRAM and a few retail shopping stores will rest along the Willamette River. The area is scheduled to be completed by 2010 and will have a $1.9 billion value. Yes, that's billion, with a B.

Here's a picture of The John Ross with The Meriwether and The future Atwater Place in the background:

It's no secret that many Realtors in the area already dislike this particular company for openly advertising their lower listing fees, which they claim may be misleading to the average home seller.

Although it's meant for consumers that are selling their current property, I wonder how the R/E company that is selling these condos feels about the placement of this billboard?

I have my own personal opinions, but what do you guys think?

Pretty good placement with a pretty shallow message.  I don't like the discount broker model but you have got to give them credit for being rather intelligent about ad placement.

I wish I made $500 an hour.  It is misleading marketing like this that make Realtors look bad - but the real answer is.....If I can make my sellers more money by using my services, would they be willing to pay $500/hour fees?  My customers will say yes.....every single one of them.

Indeed...

I can't say I wouldn't do the exact same thing.  I'd be the most hated man in Portland to close half of those condos.  Then move to Mexico!

This kind of advertising pisses me off and I'm not even an agent. People are always trying to take from others success to make themselves look better. But it's like my mom used to say, "You get what you pay for".

These ads are extremely misleading, but they certainly create the buzz that they were intended to create.  Thanks Jeff for not giving this company more publicity by advertising their name.  There is a place for their business model, but I question their need to grossly inflate reality.  Kind of borders on the line of disparagement.  JMHO.

Yeah...

Better watch out or they'll put a sign on the lawn of your office Valerie!

Wonder if they need a discount loan to go with that discount brokerage. Let's refer them to Lending Tree...

The closing I went through yesterday make me feel I deserve at minimum $500 per hour.  LOL

Jeff, we don't have hardly any billboards out in Sandy, maybe 2 or 3.  Plus, our broker owns the land our building is on.  :)  For the RE company whose project this sign is just outside of, it probably upsets them.  But I have found that the best way to deal with this company is just to ignore their stretched truths and silly statements.  Their marketing department must have just read the book "Buzzmarketing".  I have to agree with Jacob's mother, "you get what you pay for".
