Have you been considering relocating to Bedford County, Virginia? Located in Central Virginia, Bedford County was established in 1754 and named for the Fourth Duke of Bedford. In 1839, the Town of Liberty (now the City of Bedford) was established. Bedford City is the county seat, but independent of Bedford County. A Board of Supervisors governs the County and employs a County Administrator as chief administrative officer.

The county is located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and covers 764 beautiful square miles. Bedford County is bounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west, the James River on the northeast and Smith Mountain Lake on the south. Lynchburg is approximately 20 minutes from Bedford City. We enjoy four seasons and a moderate climate.

Bedford County is home to the National D-Day Memorial, several wineries, the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway (located on Rte 460 West). Thomas Jefferson’s retreat, Poplar Forest, is located in the community of Forest. Recreation abounds in Bedford County; hiking, boating and fishing are popular activities.

Bedford County is one of the fastest growing in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a population of over 60,000. Industry, commerce and agriculture ensures a strong economic base. Bedford County is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. I've included some of the information that would be helpful when moving to Bedford County.

- US 460 connecting with I-81 near Roanoke
- US 29 (accessible in Lynchburg)
- US 501 linking the Shenandoah Valley with central North Carolina
