Found Money - What Do You Do?

DO YOU PICK IT UP?

coins For whatever reson, I have always been a person who picks up wayward coins that I find. Much of that probably has to do with my upbringing. You see, I grew up in a middle class working family. We were not poor, but we not upper class by a long shot. My parents did many creative things to make ends meet. The other day I was listening to a story on National Public Radio. The story detailed a family that always picks up coins and they log how much money they pick up. It started out as a project and has turned into something they do regularly. This year, they have picked up more than $1,000. Now that is a little more than pocket change.

Yes, I pick it up. I want to know where this family has found $1,000!! I think I've netted about .43 so far this year!

Yes, I pick up all the time. When my kids were little, I would point them out to them and they would put the coins in their piggy bank! Now I do the same with my clients little ones. They get excited!

I am not sure where they found the $1,000 but they said they take long walks and always look down :)

I started a log the other day...I am up to .11, so i have a ways to go in order to catch up with you :)

In my part of the country, Commerce Bank counts coins for free. So turning them in is really easy. At the end of the day, I empty my pockets into a coin jar. Several times a year it fills up and I take it to Commerce. This is usually good for at least $100. Keep searching

Yes, I watch me feet too, how else would I know where I was going? LOL Like you, I grew up in a middle class family, and had to be thrifty. It was always a special walk when we found a coin or two. In all my years of picking up those coins I don't think I have come even close to $100.00 much less $1,000. Guess I walk in the wrong neighborhoods.

This family says...always look for silver. I once found a twenty dollar bill blowing across the road. I looked in the direction that it came from and found 4 more. That was truly a good day

I never used to, but after reading this I think I will start! I could use an extra $1,000 or more per year!

I need to move near you. Poeple seems to be dropping a lot of change !!!

I always pick up coins. My grandmother taught me to do that and put it in the bank.

I pick up coins all the time, I love it and it amazes me that so many people do NOT pick them up. Usually I keep one 1 cent coin for good luck and I give the others away to people - for good luck.

I used to run a few restaurants and the "penny" was my test for the cleaning crew.

I would strategicly place some coins in corners they usually forgot.. . . . . Well you know what happens next

Always, everywhere! In fact I save all my pocket change as many do and dposit it or invest it every year. On average it amounts o about 300 to 400 per year!.... not chump change!

Bo - See I told you were my brother from another mother....lol. $300-400 invested certainly adds up after a few years. Keep it up.,

Anne - Good test for checking to see if the counters were cleaned. Hopefully you didn't tell them how you knew the counters weren't cleaned.....or else, they would just pick up the penny and keep it moving :)

Thanks for the post. I just counted my collected coin (from the pocket and other sources), I totaled about $80.00. I was surprised at the dollar value.

William - I am telling you. The spare change ads up. Even if you deposit it into a "just because" account, after awhile, you will have some significant money. Keep saving that change

William - It doesn't take much if you keep your eyes open. These days, the younger folks tend to throw away pennies...so they are there for the taking

Leander, Yes I do pick up stray coins. Obviously they add up. LOL

Well, that is crazy. Im sure its possible. There is change all over the place. I want to know who is throwing all their change around. I have no problem picking it up.

I was at the beach on monday and watched a guy with one of those metal detectors. I am not sure how much money he found, but I watched him dig up quite a few coin. The free money IS out there for the taking.

I do the same thing - a project I started with my kids for fun. I just rolled and banked $220.00 in change picked up in the street (and I rolled nothing smaller than dimes).

Scott - $220 is nothing to sneeze at. Yesterday I picked up $0.14 on one trip to the Supermarket :)

I pick up coins...one time I found a dollar...but a thousand dollars? They sure are lucky!

Sally, - $1,000 starts with a penny. A couple of months ago, I was in Atlantic City and found $5.00. Thats 500 pennies :)

Yes, I pick up coins. All I usually find are pennies, but I was always told that they are pennies from heaven and it means there is an angel watching over me. I think most people don't worry about pennies much, but they add up fast!

I say coins left on the ground are like men. A penny is a bad man- leave it alone. A quarter is a great guy! Pick him up and put him in your pocket! It's a joke....LOL

Suzanne - It seems like since I posted this, my found money has lessened. But I can definately tell you that if you pay attention, you will see money that you previously would have walked over.

Debbie - There must be plenty of angels watching over me. I can tell you this. When times have gotten tough and I cashed in those pennies along with the change I have around the house, those same pennies have been a real blessing to me.
