Most of us are aware of the value of setting goals.  We've been taught this throughout our lives, so I won't go too in depth into goal setting.  However, how many of us have a vision?  What is a vision?  How does it differ from a goal.

I will define it this way...a goal is what we do to ensure that we achieve our vision.

This is a very simplistic definition, so let's dive in a little more.  Many successful business people set goals and achieve them.  Then they move onto the next goal and become absorbed in achieving goal after goal ignoring their families.  40 years later they wake up divorced and looking back at all the things they missed in their lives.  Blindly, yet successfully running the treadmill much better than their competition.

I believe the reason for this is the lack of vision.  Goals motivate, but vision inspires.  Visions change lives and even sometimes the world.  There are many examples of this.

Our founding fathers had a vision and they created a nation.  The vision is what caused them to sacrifice and fight through against overwhelming odds.

Great athletes have vision.  It keeps them pushing their bodies and minds to unbelievable levels.  It inspires them to sacrifice all to break records or win the Gold.

I'm sure in our businesses we all have goals.  X number of sales, x number of phone calls, x number of blogs and so on.  I challenge you to peel back the layers and go deeper.  Ask yourself why.  What do I want?  What am I leaving behind?  What am I teaching those around me by my example?

Once you've asked yourself these questions and gotten some answers, then define your vision.  Make it specific.  Find pictures, see yourself living the life you want.  Feel that life, smell that life...taste it.  Be very, very specific.  Focus on it daily.

Then take a look at what you are currently doing.  Do the things you do move you closer to your vision or take you further away?  Eliminate the things that take you away from what you want.  There are time thieves everywhere.  Life is short and we don't have time to be drawn away from our dreams.

I will leave you with these thoughts for now.  There is more to be said, however I will do a second edition of this if there is enough interest.  Thanks.

Great post. Vision to me is seeing things and life the way you want it to be, or the way you "envision it". Goals are the GPS (formerly road map) to get you there.

Sheila - You are absolutely correct.  Goals are the vehicle that takes us to where we see ourselves.

A vision or a goal. .. a lot of us lack the initiative to set them. . .after all is our blue-print for our own success

Fernando - you are correct and when we fail to set our own goals and visions, we leave ourselves open to someone else setting them for us.

RFK once said: "There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why... I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?" I think of that quote when I ponder the concept of vision...  vision tends to be looking at the larger picture and creating something positive.  Goals are those milestones we must achieve in order to realize our vision.

Laura, this is it. This is the advice I would take from and give to everyone! This is the way to keep from being the little hamster in the wheel. Going round and round and round and just not really getting anywhere.

You've done a great post here. I'm flagging it for a feature. We'll see if the AR uppers listen. Great job.

I always thought of a "goal" as something to achieve, but that it must be "quantifyable", an end result.  I think of "vision" as how you picture the results of reaching your goal.  If the vision is desireable, you will work harder at your goal.

I would like to add that I end each year (December) reviewing what I have achieved during the 11 prior months, and try to envision what I want for myself and my family in the coming year.  I then make 100 (no more, no less) QUANTIFYABLE (sp?) goals that will help me towards my vision of what I want to achieve for the year.  I work diligently at my list from January to December, and have for the past 5 years...it works for me.

Scott - great way of putting it.  I believe that when we have a clear vison, then we must take the next step to make sure that our goals line up with that vision.  Then we must break our goals down into actions.  Actions that do not take us toward our goals and visions must be eliminated.  If our vision is vague or uncertain, then we cannot map out a course.  We are like leaves driven in the wind.  This takes thought and introspection.  It makes everything we do purpose driven.  It removes distraction.  There are many doors that open up to us everyday...the challenge is choosing the door that leads us to the place we want to be and ignore those that do not.  Too many times we walk through every door that opens and never choose the ones that lead to our definition of success.

Scott - good stuff!  I would encourage you to reach beyond the year.  And I would add that we should savor each moment along the way.  After all why wait until we've reached the ultimate vision?  Enjoy the ride!!!!

Thanks for your reply - what I failed to mention is that I keep a 5-year and 10-year goal list, from which I draw my annual goals from; many of my longer-term goals are not achievable in a year.

Scott - I'm so relieved!  I love to see people that implement what they learn.  That's what separates the men from the boys!

Hi Laura very good post and very insightful!  Like you said if you do not a vision of what you really want your goals may be taking you away from the things that really make you happy.

Sometimes we are just too short-sighted.

Vision ... It Could Be Whatever Is Personal For You and How You Want Your Business to Work. The scary thing about creating a vision is you have to know what you want and, well, I feel like I am still banging rocks in that department.

Harrision - I would challenge you to peel back some more layers.  Why do you want to do that?  What is the driving force behind that motivation?

Regina - I had the same problem.  There are so many things to choose from.  Start with the tangibles...in other words... I want this type of home, this type of car...I want to vacation here...and so on.  These are physical things that you can wrap your mind around.  Your vision will grow from there.

Laura,

Goals take us step by step toward the achievement of our vision.  That's my two cents.  Thanks for commenting on my blog.

Vision is everything!  If we do not visualize our goals how can we reach them? As I sit here with the Olympics in the background, I am well aware that every athlete visualizes their success. We need to take a lesson from the Olympians!

Mike - Thanks.

Sharon - I wonder how many athletes hope to make it to the Olympics?  Skill plays a huge part in getting there...and they all have skill...so what takes some to the Olympics and not others.  I think it may be having a vision that drives these winners to go beyond what others find possible.  I believe it is the same for anyone in anything they do!

I completely agree with the difference between Goals and Visions.  We all have goals but very few move to the next step by visualizing yourself meeting that Goal.  I have found success in writing my goals down and setting a date of completion for each.  I then visualize the end result and write the steps I need to take.  One note of advice that has worked for me......I never let anyone's negative input as to "why I can't do something" allow me to rethink my plan.  When someone tells me I can't do something it motivates me MORE to get there.   As I am working towards each goal I will then look back at that initial list and cross through the ones that were accomplished until I have met all goals on that initial list.  Without writing them down and visualizing myself there I would have never accomplished them.  It works!!!

Andrea - Thanks for sharing.  writing them down is one great way to visualize and keep track.

Laura, you existentialist you! What a great, great blog!  Sorry it took me a couple of days to respond!

I love Jon's RFK quote above.  It is perhaps one of RFKs best.

I think several people have said it: goals are the means to bring the vision into reality.

Vision is seeing the end result with clarity of purpose and an an unwavering commitment to achieve it.
