While reading through The Huffington Post today, I saw something that I hadn't heard about before: Sustainable wooden keycards for hotel rooms. What a brilliantly simple idea.

"Sustainable Cards LLC of Boulder has donated more than 70,000 wood hotel key cards to use at hotels throughout the Denver area" - Denver Business Journal.

I checked their website and I love their ideas: sustainable gift cards, membership cards, and hotel key cards.

This reminds me to "never overlook the obvious" .... and "not seeing the wood for the trees".

What an incredible idea. It truly is "brilliantly simple". Thanks for the post!

Stewart,  Your are right that is a great idea.  Even gift cards.  I don't know anyone who refills a gift card.  Straight into the trash.  I think the plastic gift card if going to become the next plastic bag.  "Plastic or wood?"

Brandon - Thanks for reading.

Jimmy - Wood makes sense - Wicker baskets made with material of natural origin.

Although they may be "cool" and easier on the landfills, I am sure this increases cutting down more trees lol

I wondered about the timber harvesting question with wood. It does say they harvest from sustainable forests. I wonder if you could do something comparable with bamboo since it is more of a renewable material in that it grows so quickly.

It is terrific that we can "go back" on some things.  How about paper ones? Like metrocards.

All the best!

What an interesting idea.  I would wonder about the process.  The other day I saw a show and they were 'going green' then used Brazillian Cherry advising it was sustainable.  Isn't Brazillian Cherry from the Rainforests?  I think that might not be exactly 'green friendly'!

I do worry that sometimes they advertise things as green that are not - however if they truely are environmentally friendly it would be wonderful!

I had never heard of this! It does seem to be an interesting concept, perhaps they make them out of bamboo.

I've had real wood business cards for about 10 years now. One can also get real wood postcards and much more. For the past five years, I've been using Cards of Wood.

Russel - You should have told us all about this a long time ago..... :) Brilliant move!

I checked the "Cards of Wood" website and noticed they've beeing in business since 1960. Now's the time for them to start making the key cards.
