I recently went up to the Browns Park Utah area hunting garnet. We hiked up the partially dry creek bed and up a draw to search through the rocks. We didn't have to much luck. We may have been in the wrong area. My Sister found a large piece we think is garnet. I did get some photos to share.

This is the draw looking down from halfway up.

It was tricky going up the draw and even trickier going down!

This looks like some very rugged terrain! I am not exactly sure what a draw is? It looks to be a dry crrek bed or an are of rockslide; am I close?

Wow! Great photo, Julie. Not sure if I would hike that, even if I were a hiker. lol

Rich it is where the water has cut a path. In this case it has cut a path down the side of the mountain from the melting snow.

Tanya I wasn't sure if one of us was going to break or twist an ankle on the lose rock before the day was over.

Touche!!! It actually did melt there. Some mountains still have some snow. I am in Idaho this week and Saturday it will be 45 degrees at night. Jackson will be 35 degrees. Tonight it is windy and cold.

Julie, that is one steep path! It does look like rugged terrain, but what an adventure. I would love to try that one day. Thanks for sharing your part of the world.

Interesting post Julie.  I've wondered about hunting for garnets - my family is from New England and we've got a number of pieces of garnet jewelry. My understanding was that my grandmother's family found many of the garnets in Massachusetts or NH and had the jewelry made.  But I've never heard of anyone finding, or looking for that matter, locally for garnets.  So I wondered what the scoop was - all the garnets are gone?, the likely spots have been developed? - who knows.  Thanks for reviving my curiosity.
