Grover Cleveland Birthplace

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential Damiano Realty

The 22nd and 24th President of the United States, Grover Cleveland.

The house that is the birthplace of Grover Cleveland, located in Caldwell / West Caldwell NJ, was built in 1832 as the Manse or pastor's residence for the First Presbyterian Church at Caldwell. Cleveland's father, the Rev. Richard Cleveland was minister here from 1834 - 1841.

The structure originally stood as a two story main section building with a one story kitchen to the east and a one story lean-to at the rear. It was enlarged several times between 1848 - 1870 to meet the growing needs of the Presbyterian clergy. This house is an excellent example of local vernacular architecture.

Here is a photo of this well preserved property as it looks today

The historical significance of the home was first noted in 1881 when Cleveland was running for Governor of New York and his political star was on the rise. His ascension up the political ladder also coincided with the interest in preserving his birthplace as a museum. A group of Cleveland's friends and admirers began negotiations to purchase the home in 1907 and their efforts culminated in the opening of the home to the public on March 18, 1913.

The Grover Cleveland Birthplace State Historic Site is the only house museum in the country dedicated to the interpretation of President Cleveland's life.

The Museum is located at 207 Bloomfield Avenue and admission is FREE

The hours of operation are: Wednesdays - Saturdays 10am - noon & 1 - 4 pm. Sundays 1 - 4 pm

Yes Sal. If you like history, it's a great place to go see and it's close by too. Another good place is Dey Mansion in Totowa.
