Out of a healthy respect for Homeland Security I stayed away from the airplanes (LOL). I loved my morning with my cousin Amanda Marie (who is on her way to a lovely vacation with her girlfriend and God-daughter.) While waiting for the others to arrive I actually went on an early morning turtle run in Midwood, Brooklyn, NY so stay tuned for an upcoming peek at some lovely, lovely homes. I shall have to start featuring Brooklyn more often. It appears that I have been spending more time in Kings County than Queens. I'm glad the ladies needed a lift because I couldn't resist bringing my Nikon to collect a little eye candy during our airport outing. After all we are talking JFK people. That place is beyond huge (over 5,000 acres) and I love airplanes. I think they are gorgeous and must admit I sort of regret not photographing them (but I will not jeopardize my Nikon). I've seen cameras get consfiscated. Maybe when I go back to pick her up I'll be brave and ask permission to photograph the planes (or not). Security is very tight nowadays, so I selected views that would not compromise anything.

Did you know that the airport was renamed in 1963 in memory of the late President John F. Kennedy? Prior to that it wall known as "Idlewild Airport," "New York International Airport," and "Major General Alexander E. Anderson Airport." Construction started in the early 1940's and they have been building and expanding upon it ever since.

Everything you could ever want to know about the John F. Kennedy Airport may be learned from The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Wikipedia.

According to Wikipedia, "John F. Kennedy International Airport (IATA: JFK, ICAO: KJFK, FAA LID: JFK) is an international airport located in Queens in southeastern New York City about 12 miles (19 km) from Lower Manhattan. It is the top international air passenger gateway to the United States and is also the leading freight gateway to the country by value of shipments. The airport is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages the two other major airports in the New York metropolitan area, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia. JFK airport is the base of operations for JetBlue Airways and is also a major international gateway hub for Delta Air Lines and American Airlines. Over 80 airlines operate out of JFK."

Carolyn, I am flying tomorrow and your post got me thinking... are we not to photograph planes, etc.? Not that I was planning to.  How about taking pictures of my family inside the airport? Or having my camera in my carry-on?  I would hate for my Nikon to get confiscated. :-(

Carolyn, I never knew that Kennedy Airport was originally Idlewild Airport.  What a name.  Glad it was renamed after John F. Kennedy, that name sounds so much better.  Can you say *Idlewild* ten times fast????  It is a tongue twister for me.

C, I'm dating myself but I flew out of Idlewild as a little kid. After the Kennedy assassination, the name changed.

Carolyn, nice pictures. Are you going to tell everyone that the airport name is easier to say than LaGuardia? LOL

Carolyn, I, too hate to date myself but I remember flying in and out of Idlewild airport when I was young---it was so much fun when you're a kid!  Kennedy now is so busy and so huge but I still choose it over LaGuardia (those runways at LaGuardia are short!).  Thanks for the eye candy!

Fred, way too funny!

Gary, it's fun when you date yourself. It always makes for interesting speculation (LOL).

Jeannette, landfill is the name of the game (LOL).

Val, three posts in a row, too funny. I'm tongue twisting, brain twisting (LOL).

Shirley, people take pictures in and around airports all of the time. However, NYC Airports have been under terrorist  threat alerts since 9-11, so sometimes if the warning color is for a higher alert, or there is security intelligence, then they take notice of what people are doing with their cameras, standing patterns, loitering, etc. If people are aiming towards security check points, security electronic devices, or anything considered sensitive, depending on what is happening and where they are it might not be a good thing. I can not answer your inquiry because I honestly do not know. I do know that there are times when, for reasons unknown to all except the security personnel, airlines do not want people taking pictures in certain areas. It, the variables, change hourly, daily, weekly... I kinda want to go back and photograph the planes, but I will do it on an off peak day like Wednesday and during an off peak hour.

Carole, you are very welcome. Dating yourself is not a bad thing, you know... ;-)

Carolyn, JFK is a huge airport similar to Atlanta. I never have flown into JFK, but I do remember the day that he was assassinated... Funny how things like that stick in your mind...

Cristal, you are very welcome. I'm thinking about popping over to LGA and taking a couple of shots of it as well. JFK isn't as condensed and is so much easier to capture.

Michael, I know what you mean. When I was a baby they would do these specials and show the funeral every anniversary. I remember being a child and wondering who he was because my whole family would be crying as if they had lost a personal friend. It was the same with Martin Luther King Jr. I understand now, but I didn't understand the civil rights movement as a child back then, or how profound the loss of these two men were to a lot of people.

I agree with Cristal- the airport does look so much prettier through a camera- I guess we so busy at the airport, we really don't take the chance to really "see" it.

And I can't answer Shirley's question either- but a camera is not forbidden on planes.  It will not be confiscated at the security check point- but you will have to take it out of the bag and let the TSA screeners look at it.  When I used to work in TV we would have to get special permission to take video of the security check points- but that was a couple years ago- not sure what the rules are any more.

C - I like airports and planes almost as much as trains (ok, I prefer flying to rail travel). I have been through JFK airport several times. Not sure which is more crowded JFK, Hartsfield (Atlanta) or Ohare. Thanks for the eye candy.

Becky, I prefer driving everywhere I go, unless a plane is necessary. I don't know all of the rules either and have traveled with video and still cameras as well. Terrorism has colored a lot of how we do things nowadays. In one building, they took the rolls from some Japanese tourists and gave them new film. They were making a really big stink about their vacation pictures. Who knows what any of this is all about? I'm not privy to it, I just try to avoid it. :-)

Mike, I like all forms of travel, but my favorite is the car because you can pull over any time you like and go exploring. I usually use trains and planes if I have to be expedient. Other than that, I'm a road trip fanatic.

C - I agree with the car being the best way to travel, if you can't do it by horseback (or camel back)

Great pictures, C!! Probably a good idea to get permission to take pictures of the planes. I don't think I would have thought of that. Smart lady! :)
