Strange Statue of Buddha

photo by: Robert Swetz    Bagan Myanmar (Burma)   May - 2008

This has to be one of the strangest statues of Buddha that I have ever seen.

As I was walking around in Bagan waiting for a buggy ride to the next temple I came across this statue inside a small structure very close to the road.

As I looked inside the structure I saw was this Buddha statue, at first I didn't think nothing of it, but as I got closer I saw this strange looking head in the chest of the statue of Buddha.

What I was wondering was this head inside the Buddha statue put inside the chest cavity while the statue was built or some time after? And why was the head put inside the Buddha statue.

At the time I took the photograph I want to ask quetions and find out but their were to many Burmese trying to sell me tourist junk so I just wanted to get out of the area.

This statue dates back approximately 1000 years.

If anyone knows the reason for this creepy looking head put inside this statue please let me know?

 Robert Swetz

PS, The white spot on the cheak of the head, could that be a ghost of some sort?

Robert, I will have to agree with you that it is a strange statue, I also have to admit that I don't know enough about Buddha to even wager a guess about it's origin or purpose, but it certainly is an interesting statue

Hi Robert,

I would venture to guess that it represents the God in all Men and is a metaphor for the soul.  As for the white dot, it could be.  Perhaps you caught on film what 1000 years ago they could only represent in stone.  Oh, and I am guessing that the "Breakfast of Champions" comment is because it looks like Buddha ate Buddha - funny.

Take care, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

Robert, I only studied world religions in school for a few semesters, but if I remember the different Buddhas, in some regions a Buddha or bodhisattva was a wise leader acting as a vehicle for others to find enlightenment.  Could it be that your picture is symbolic of the sacrifice made by one so that others could reach Nirvana?  Could the statue be a theoretical link between the ideals of Buddhism and Christianity- that one would sacrifice themselves so that others could be saved, re-birth, a new life springing from an old one?

Who knows? Maybe this is some weird really old attempt at grafitti & statue defilement done by some misguided youth years ago (LOL)  Nah, I'm sure there is a deeper message, but since I don't follow that form of religion, I'm clueless.

Robert,  Your picture had me trying to remember where I had seen this same image, since I have not been to Myanmar.  It came to me in the wee hours: a Steely Dan concert 15-20 years ago when he played the song Bodhisattva.  I looked up the words and got a bit of a cosmic chuckle.  Your Nirvana may just be real estate, because the words Realtor and Bodhisattva could almost be interchangeable.  Thanks for the strole down memory lane!

Would you peel me up off the floor and drag me when you start running? Pretty sure I would have passed out right there if it was late at night!

Thank you Newbie Roy! If you go through some of the comments above, I think people opinions about the statue were very close to what it might mean.
