Hoping to break ground in 2009, The Poseidon Resources received its final approval from the California State Lands Commission and now has all the permits needed to proceed with construction of its desalination plant on the grounds of the Aqua Hedionda Lagoon in 2009. In a vote yesterday, Poseidon may proceed to co-lease the Encina Power Plant's intake of seawater.

The Encina Power plant currently uses the seawater for it's power plant's cooling system but will be soon be converting to an air cooled system. The Poseidon's Desalination Proposal of using the seawater intake had stirred opposition from environmentalists and a recent legal opposition by environmentalists was dismissed against one of the permits this past week.

All Systems Go! Poseidon expects to deliver drinking water to nine local water agencies by 2011 and in a statement by Poseidon Resources, it  rightfully claims this a historic day for California as 'desalinated water' will now be a  measurable component of the State of California's water resources.

Very cool William.  I have never looked in to this topic, but have always wondered why it is not something being done all over the country?  Good to hear!

William I think desalination of water when we are close to ocean resources is a GREAT idea for a steady water supply.

Hi Aaron, I think the biggest obstacle  ( at least in the past) was the cost associated with this process. Poseidon worked out a new system and it may become the model for many more plants around both our country and the world over. A new day is dawning and our water shortfall issues may have a viable solution now. All good news as far as I can tell.

Hi Gary, I think so as well. It does seem odd when you think about it, that with all the oceans in the world, that there should ever be a shortage of potable water to drink. Now it appears the solution has been worked out but we will need many of these plants to take up the shortfall of rain and the lack oof melting snow from the mountainous areas.

Far better for the environment! Great step toward alternatives for fresh drinking water when sources are being depleted over time.

Hi William, I think that's a great idea. I hope the rest of Southern California Counties follow suit.

I've been watching this series of articles on your blog.

I can't recall today to what the environmentalists objected.

In fact, I can't even begin to fathom an objection.

Hi Sally, I couldn't have said it better. Many Thanks. This new system will likely prove it's worth over time and I am sure we will see many more of these plants take up the gap between supply and demand. I think eventually at least for San Diego that has to buy 90% of it's water, this is the very best solution.

Hi Mana, I am believing that now that there is a track to run on and the obstacles have been overcome, it will provide the way for more plants to be approved and built along the coast.

Hi Lenn, There has been so much discussion and actions to prevent approval on the basis that the marine life will be harmed and the discharge of 50% of the sea water back into the ocean will have a very high salt content and may play havoc with the saline balance and that the sea life ordinarily found where the water will be discharged will in some way be harmed. We shall see but I expect the ocean has a lot of water in it and it would probably take more time than the earth has to oversaturate the water with salt. As for the marine life, the Aqua Hedionda Lagoon is a man-made lagoon to grow sea life to offset  any marine life that was originally lost by the Power Plants use of the seawater in its filtration system. Poseidon has overcome all these and many other objections with its plans and finally won out. It even has to buy carbon credits to offset the energy it uses to run the desalination plant and to bring the water in and filter 1/2 of it for drinking water. They didn't miss a thing here and Poseidon satisfactorily addressed every issue.

This sound much better that the "toilet to tap" program.  Could they have come up with a more unappealing name!

I suppose anything is possible Steve but I'd hate to think about,What if they did, lol. Like " Enhanced, Fully Enriched Water".  It sort of gives the " Don't 'Waste' Water" a whole new meaning. :-).

William,

Thanks for the update on this program. Good to hear that it is progressing. It is an infrastructure investment - something that all communities and the nation should be doing, investing in infrastructure for the future.

William,
It seems that there is lack of water eh ? Well, hope that they will do and follow a strong regulation, so water can be used properly and not wasted.

William ... I agree that the "he GSE's were moving the ball closer to the end zone but in fact were heading to the wrong goal posts".  Let's see how this develops.  Best wishes.  Harrison
