Super blogger Ardell DellaLoggia recently wrote about songs that end up in our heads and minds. That got me to thinking about the memorable or irritating songs I have heard over the years. Often those things that are most memorable are also the most irritating. Advertising agencies know that, hence all the radio and TV ads we are exposed to that make you want to damage the set.
Now, having worked in radio, I know some pretty weird or annoying novelty tunes and I have blogged on a few of them. Some of those songs on that list include -- They Are Coming to Take Me Away, The Ballad of Irving, Yummy, Yummy, Yummy I Got Love In My Tummy, Tip Toe Through the Tulips. That short list only scratches the surface of bad and silly songs, of course.
One song that takes me back to the 1960's is Mairzy Doats. This was recorded by a group called The Innocence. Now I was a teenager back then and thought this was good novelty stuff --misguided.
I was listening to the 45 RPM one day and my older uncle came by the house -- he was a WWI vet. He heard the song playing and told me the history. Even then it was old, an antique, that went back to the 1940's. You can read the whole history of this goofy song by clicking on the photo of the lamb. Stupid as it might be, I think of this song a few times a year -- whenever I see a post like Ardell's about catchy, stupid or annoying songs. When I think silly songs, it is number one in my mind and has been for forty years.
If you are tough enough, you can hear the same version I was taken with as a kid, by clicking on the youtube below the animals.
