New Earth Fissures Plaguing Pinal County and Maricopa County, Arizona

Those of us living in the Phoenix Valley, are well aware of the fissures running throughout various parts of our valley. The Arizona Geological Society has just completed updated maps from April showing new fissures in Queen Creek in Maricopa and Pinal County. I've included a link "here" for access to the new map. Queen Creek is located in the southeast valley and straddles both county lines.

For an indepth story on these newly discovered fissures, I've provided a link to the story provided by the fissure in Queen Creek East Valley Tribune just today. An excerpt taken out of the Tribune is quoted below to explain to buyers, sellers, Realtors, just "what" a fissure is.

"Fissures are cracks in the earth caused by groundwater pumping. Geological survey officials call them "serious geological hazards" and say they are found in the valleys of central and south-central Arizona. Pinal County is home to three-quarters of the state's known earth fissures."

Home buyers need to be especially cautious when purchasing in this area. I've included a link to the Arizona Geological Society Fissure site "here" for Mesa, Chandler Heights, and Scottsdale, etc. Be sure to check it out.

We here in Texas Teri have problems with ground shifting and cracking our foundations but this sounds very serious in the Phoenix area as well. A fissure sounds a lot bigger than ground shifting. Caution to all buyers in this area.

Gary, you're so right. I just saw this today, and wanted to get the information out there for buyers to proceed with caution. ;-)

Well Tom, you need to come for a visit. We live in a beautiful state. ;-)

That's a great graphic, Teri. You DO find the best illustrations! I don't know if we deal with fissues in the Sierra as I hear more about homes built on top of abandoned mines and people suddenly falling through a giant hole to the center of the earth.

Elizabeth, isn't it fun? I love it!!! This fissure situation has really come to the forefront since 2004 when building was so crazy in Queen Creek.....now they've updated the report they came out with in April of this year.....;-)

Hi Teri - Thankfully this is one thing we don't have to be worried about out here in MASS :) I can see why you would want to know this when planning on where to buy out in Arizona...good info :)

Teri... I had no idea that you had Fissures, thanks for the link to the article. In Central Florida we have sink holes that are very random...

Debbie, Arizona has lots of good stuff...last year a horse disappeared or fell into one of the fissures that just opened up.....we have sink holes here too! ;-)

How's the rain in your area? Florida seems to be getting its fair share of water. ;-)
