"Art On The Bench" - Local Artists Bring Color To Hickory NC - Part 1

Early in 2008, the City of Hickory's Public Art Commission began the search for local artists to participate in a new program called "Art On The Bench". Artists submitted designs for the benches and the PAC made 21 colorful choices. The benches are now complete and placed at various locations around Hickory.

Here are the first 4 benches located in beautiful downtown Hickory on Union Square. I will be sharing the other benches in Part 2 and Part 3 since I am still trying to locate them all.. Hickory NC Artist Bench Floral

Vickie Jo Franks created this folk

art sun and floral design. It's hard to

see in my photo but it reads "Please Do Not Litter" on the bottom of the bench.

Hickory NC Art Bench Blues Music

Matthew Ninemire painted this bench with musical symbols and overlapping concentric circles.

Hickory NC Art Bench Dogs Catawba Humane

This is probably one of my favorite benches since I love dogs..

The artist is Tom Perkins and he reminds us to Adopt from The Catawba County Animal Shelter.

Hickory NC Art Bench Fire Hydrant

This bench was designed and painted by Jeff Morgan. It portrays a downtown sidewalk with cracks and a fire hydrant.

Hickory Public Art Commission Chairman David Zagaroli said "it was such a success that we are planning to have a Phase 2 of "Art on the Bench. That's great to know, maybe I will enter the next one and STAGE my bench..

I think this is a very good idea. Our benches are another advertising, and it is too much of that crap. The art on the benches is a much better idea.

How fun is that? Instant local culture - do they put a finish on to protect them from the elements. A fun one might be done by an elementary classroom - kids say the darndest things.

The dog bench is my favorite. Thanks for sharing.

Sharon, Those Benches are great. Usable Art! We do similar things here, but haven't done the Benches yet. I'll have to forward your post to our Arts Commission.

Cheryl, I absolutely love these painted benches! What a way for a town to add some artistic flavor and kudos to your City of Hickory's Public Art Commission for making this happen. Thanks for posting this.

Yes I'm jealous Cheryl, I've traveled up to NC for some furniture deals. Luckily for me it wasn't too far! We have an artsy town here in Buford GA also, it makes it fun doesn't it?

I was very happy to read all the positive feedback to our Art on the Bench program. We are now planning Phase 2 which will add up to 20 more benches. Those of us on the commission have had a great time working together and many thanks go to Donna Cullum for her dedicated service.
