When I first moved to Washington, I got some advice from a colleague (single, like me) who told me tht I should never, ever go out with any man who lived on a boat at the Soutwest Marina.

"They're all weird!"  she exclaimed.

Years later, I ignored that advice for a few weeks, and discovered this whole community of people who lived on boats.  And, yes, they were a bid odd, but it was an interesting experience.

One thing I've learned to love about this little corner of the city is the fish market.  It's set up as dozens of barges full of fresh seafood.  Some of them even cook it for you.  So whether it's crabs, lobsters, halibut or whatever, this is a fun place to come to get it!

The fish market is on Maine Avenue, under the overpass where I-95 funnels traffic into Washington.

Patricia, there is not much better food than fresh caught and cooked fish from the sea! Oh, how I love it. In Galveston Bay we will go to the shrimping boats and buy pounds of fresh shrimp and go back to boil it up! Yum.

I don't think they're wierd...do you?

I haven't made it to the fish market this year.  Guess I have been so busy working on the weekends that I forget about eating.  You just reminded me that I haven't picked crabs once this season...bummer!

We would be in HEAVEN there!  This entire family is crazy over seafood!  When Liam was 3 he was with us at a restaurant eating oysters.  (Steamed) He spoke up and let us know that he wanted one - he LOVES them!  When he was younger he used to call scallops "ball shrimp" - I have NO idea where that came from - anyhow, the place looks like it would be just what this family needs!  I don't think I ever met anyone that lived on a boat and I have met some characters!

Pat, I love the Maine Avenue seafood market.  It's something about the atmosphere of an outdoor fish market that's invigorating.  The fish is fresh and tastes great!

Pat,

I would love the opportunity to visit the fish market and pick out fresh fish daily.  What a selection to be had.

Pat,

Great photos. I love fish markets, be it in Korea, Italy or back home. Always interesting and the bounty amazes me and makes me wonder if it can go on forever.

Pat, I have not been to the fish market in ages.  I love it there.  I DO think the guys down there living on their boats are a bit strange?  Thanks for the reminder that I need to make a trek back down that way.
