Without becoming too political, I would just like to make a comment about our well being as a society. The past 30 some years has honed the skills of political attack machines to a fine science.

The goal line has shifted. The two major political parties have separate agendas. Republicans have taken the stance that the ends justifies the means. They spend very little effort telling and or debating the story of their candidate on the issues.

Instead they focus all of thier attention has been described as a tearing down of the other person. Destroy the other candidate and you win by default.

The naive Democrats on the other hand believe in ideals and truths. They often say " Americans are smarter than that and will see right through that" after reviewing a republican attack add that is made up of innuendo and in many cases down right lies.

The truth is that Americans are truly just lazy. Today on the Golf course I met a fellow who said that he was an Obama supporter. His concern was, he said , that Obama did not seem to have an economic plan. I asked him if he had been to the Obama Web Site.

His response was, No. I explained to him that if he took a few moments and looked at the site he would see for himself that all of his concerns were covered in great depth. Yes he did have a computer, but chose to listen to sound bites rather than take the time to research the subject matter on his own.

But I digress. I did not begin this thought process with the intention of writing a post about politics. Instead I want to cover Journalism or the lack there of in the good old USA.

I have in the last several years met many a person from outside our country. Each and every person has pretty much the same impression. They are all shocked about ' American News ' be it TV, Radio, Newspapers or the Internet.

In fact many people that I have met describe the American news experience as Tabloid back yard Gossip. I have to agree. Long gone are the hard hitting news stories where Pulitzer writing Journalists applied their trade, vetting contributors and chasing down the facts.

Today's news shows are just that. SHOWS. Designed only to provide enough sensationalism as to garner ratings which equals advertising revenues.

In days past news stories without corroboration of the facts, was not published or presented in any fashion. Un-named sources did not hit the airways. Today's news is just the opposite. The star of the show simply asks the questions that they think will be the most controversial and allow the source to answer in any way that they choose. Follow up debunking of the answer is not even a consideration. The closest you will get to that is to allow the other side to respond with their talking points.

Beyond the disservice that this does for our citizens, it serves to validate our acceptance of lies and liars. Not only do we teach our younger generations that lieing is okay we also tell the world that this nation is a nation of liars.

Should we have political candidates that run for office? Yes I think we should. But I also believe that each party should put forth their best candidate and that a vigorous debate on the issues should ensue. The people would then be able to see what each party truly has to offer and we would show the world how true democracy and freedom are played out.

As real estate Brokers and sales people we hold our selves to a high standard. Lies have no place in our careers. Nor should they for normal every day Americans.

While I suspect we might have philosophical differences on our politics, I applaud your post.  I applaud the fact that you are engaged enough to do the homework on your candidate.  I also applaud the fact that you espouse putting the best candidates up for election (I don't believe that is the case currently - on either side).  Lastly, it's a sad testimony when you have to say that lies should have no place in our "careers" or "for normal every day Americans".  If I understand you right, I think you are saying we can do better: we can and must.

Bravo! Well said my fellow Realtor. If only the Political arena could be all Truth and Fact and the Arena of Life could be filled with people who care about their country and who it's leaders are. In essence the people who bicker and complain the most are the very same ones who NEVER vote and by being lazy allowed this country to become what it is- Lies!

Herb: Very provocative piece. Those Obama supporters really are lazy aren't they? Just Kidding. I enjoyed my six years outside of America and the freedom from the press and TV, mainly because I couldn't understand what they were sayingon the TV and I couldn't read the newspaper, but I digress.

As to those days of yore, both mine and the nation's, how does that old folk tune go "but that was yesterday, and yesterday's gone"

No one ever researches the facts. I find it amazing that voters can be swayed by rhetoric that is either half true or completely false altogether. It is funny that I read your post on this today as yesterday, I was trying to write a post that allowed people within our industry access to the same folks that write this propaganda for the candidates. That way, we (AR community) could voice all of the positive things about the real estate market and get the positive impact from essentially not telling the entire story...the media does it, our leaders do it, therefore aren't we justified? (not really)...Somehow, I couldn't come up with something cohesive enough to post. Anyhow-Nicely done.

Video journalism in this country has gone completely downhill, I agree!  That's one reason I don't watch it.  What happens is that smarter people stop bothering with tabloid news, so they end up tryng to entertain the few who are left so they have someone for their sponsors to advertise to...what we have now is the result.

We need more face to face debates with unscripted questions from the public, not reporters. Abraham Lincoln could never be elected today in the television age. Its also a shame when politics is reduced to slogans such as "change", even if the supporters don't realize that the "change" chanted about is a big step towards socialism.

Great post Herb!  Very true.  As a society, we also need to spend less time seeking to be entertained, and become more educated in the real facts and substance.

Well done Herb. I quit watching the news and reading the papers several years ago. I found both mediums fluffy and depressing. I do however spend a lot of time researching stuff on the Interent. I much prefer to form my own opinions instead of being led/pulled/spun by today's so called jounalists.

Good morning Herb- I am a dual citizen after pledging allegiance to the flag 5 years ago, but I have lived in the US for 20 years in total. I completely agree that the campaign's are not about the virtues of the candidate, but the flaws and dirt that will hurt them. I have always found it so unbecoming and also surprising in such a litigious country.

Suzanne,

It is a very troubling path to go down. One of two choices. Tabloid journalism or no journalism at all. Who will become the future monitors of journalism?

I suspect that in an age where candidates are often chosen as much for there looks as for substance of thought that Lincoln might have had a tuff row to hoe.

Jim,

The facts bear out the mean truths. Just look at percentage of people who take the time to voice there oppinions with a vote.

BB,

Yes it is true that the internet has changed journalism. It is also true that urban legend and out and out lies have swayed many a voter who took the stories verbatim choosing not to corroborate the facts from fiction.

Herb, I agree we need the best of both parties and as Tom said, I don't think we have them. Unfortunately, no one can stand the scrutiny of the anal exam that is politics. Our founding fathers never envisioned what we have today and would be appalled.

Fred,

I suspect that there are a lot of things that have become common place in our society that would be considerd appaling to the founding fathers. The question is Will we let it stand?

Herb - Nice post! There is in fact too much apathy with people today. Relying on the rhetoric they hear on biased news stations they form opinions. Perhaps if they used their computers for something other than searching for porn they might find out the truth. Then again the truth hurts so they probably would ignore it!

John,

Tonight as I watched the Democratic convention Day 2 I found myself on CSPAN. No reporters no commentary no pundits just a televised event.

How refreshing that was.
