HOME OWNERS ALL KNOW THAT THEY NEED TO MAINTAIN THEIR HOME TO PROTECT THE VALUE.

IF YOU CAN'T "DO IT YOURSELF", HIRE SOMEONE.  If you don't want to do it yourself, hire expereinced people to perform maintenance for you.  Don't let your home deteriorate for lack of regular maintenance.  I've seen many Home Inspection Reports wherein the Home Inspector cites "DEFERRED MAINTENANCE" and the need for further inspection, all due to poor home owner maintenance.  Many home onwers, particularly first time home buyers, don't understand how quickly deferred maintenance can easily turn into a defect.  Maintenance is much less time consuming than repairing defects.  Home owners who neglect or defer maintenance will lose significant value if they need or wish to sell their home.

HAVE A MAINTENCE SCHEDULE. I have a strict schedule for maintence of my home.  Since I prefer to work in my real estate practice rather than performing maintenance on my home, I use the services of a HANDYMAN service based in Hamilton.  I've written about this service before when I had a list of maintenance tasks that were scheduled for July.

My home is 2 1/2 years old and when I did a walk through inside and out, I made a list and checked it twice and called the Handyman service.  They did a wonderful job of minor repairs and maintenance tasks.  However, my house needed a serious cleaning on the outside.  Folks in brick and/or stone homes don't have the problem of dirty siding, mildew growing on siding and decking material.  Then there are those dirty windows and, of course, there's no need cleaing the windows unless the dirty screens are done also.

So, yesterday was the day to POWER WASH the exterior of my home from the ground up, clean those windows and screens, window wells, and anything else that got in the way.

The front of my home gets limited sun and is subject to mildew.  Power Washing works.

Hi Lenn:

Regular maintenance of a home is akin to brushing our teeth on a daily basis. If things a re neglected- they get worse quickly.

Right you are.  It's not what I would call fun, but you've got to protect your investment.

Lenn you are correct.  If you keep up with the outside (as well as the inside) your home will look better and you may avoid a much more expensive bill a few years down the road when you discover something big that could have been prevented.

Lenn, I'll bet it looks wonderful. It amazes me at how powerwashing can make such a huge difference! We have a concrete porch and when we have men out to wash I have them do that too. I grab them to do the picnic table and by that time they're running away!

We've even found a chemical to mix with the power washing that removes tanic acid and discoloration off the roof. We are in the Piney Woods so our roofs take a hit from the Pine needles and such.

You have inspired me. I'm going to walk my house today. See what needs to be done!

Have a great Sunday! Later in the rain~Deb

If your handyman service guy is ever headed down this way let me know :)  Sounds like a great service!

Great advice we have the same problem with pine needles here and it is so important to educate our sellers about first impressions and making the home stand out in the community.

Lenn, thanks for this post. You've motivated me to get on the stick this fall and power wash the windows. They do build up the dust and dirt over time.

Gary.  Good for you.  Since I don't do windows or ladders, hiring someone who does made sense for me.

Donald. Indeed.  The pine needle, tar can be destructive and requires a lot of maintenance.

Renee.  Sometimes, it's so hard to find good folks in this area.  As soon as I discovered this company, I immediately put them to work.  I have had requests for these services for years and seldom had a resource.

Deb.  These guys were hard workers.  I can't tell you how good it feels to get rid of the grime from the outside of my house.  Even though it wasn't obvious, I knew it was there.

Pat.  Right you are.  Either I do stuff myself, with my computer in one hand and a brush or broom in the other or I hire folks who know what they're doing, leaving me to my computer in peace.

Lenn- After being in this business for awhile now I decided I wanted to live in my home the way I would as if I was going to sell it tomorrow. Why let someone else enjoy what could be my enjoyment. Must be all those 'bad' home inspections I've been privy to sinking in :)

Lenn, how did it come out looking? Any pictures of the after?? I know it's got to be great. When it's clean on the outside it always feels better and you know it's clean on the inside. I have windows to do. Like soon...
