When the appraisal business started to significantly drop off, I began looking at our situation to see what I could do to make improvements and get more clients.
Way back when, I figured we should try to get on the FHA Appraiser roster , but I listened to my partner (wife) who said we didn’t have to worry about it. Fast-forward to today and it seems like lots of loans are going FHA.
It took us about 2 months to finally get approved. At one time I heard there was a test and I even took a continuing education course online at the Appraisal Institute. I needed the hours and it was informative, but there is no longer a test.
Anyway, if you are like I was and didn’t know where to start, start here:
http://www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/sfh/appr/apr_rost.cfm
While there, notice the box on the left side regarding the Appraisal Subcommittee. http://www.asc.gov/ First off, you will have to be listed there and you will have to copy your license or certification number verbatim for your HUD application.
You will be able to fill in the application online, but you will have to print it out, sign it, and rescan it back in. They require it to be in a PDF format. When you print it out, you will notice several fields that are blank. Don’t worry about it. The online application prompts you for the necessary information, and you won’t notice the blank fields until you print it out.
Another tip I read somewhere on an appraisal forum, was that your application could possibly get held up if they can’t read your signature and match it up with your typed name.
After waiting a about a 4 – 6 weeks, I decided to go to my US Congressman’s office to see if he could help expidiate the situation. He helped me get to the right place, but it still took time. They made it sound like there was a mad rush of appraisers trying to get on the list as fast as possible. If others were like us, there is a good possibility that’s what happened.
