Boys on Bed

I think that you know my answer from the pictuBaxter Howlre!

Our first dog, Bailey, was sweet and quiet and adjusted well to crate training at night and when we were not home. We just had to do it for the first couple of "puppy brain" years.

He was so good that we got a second "child." We picked Baxter because he was sweet and quiet. That is until we got some food in him and this dog barked for everything! Needless to say, crate training did not go nearly as well. Baxter barked and whined and cried some more! The second night we wrapped an alarm clock in a towel and put it in a pouch so he could be soothedBaxter Alarm by the fake beating heart so he would not miss his mother.

Not Baxter, he ripped it up and tore it to shreds and then barked some more!

After the 3rd night of no sleep, we gave in and let him sleep on our bed. Well, he still sleeps in the bed. He has even convinced the "good dog" to join us on occasion.

Thank goodness for king sized beds!

Do you let your dogs sleep on your bed?

Lara ... How beautiful are your dogs!? I can't blame you for being a sucker. ;-) I have a Bailey too. And a Gracie. No ... they do not sleep with me. They sleep in their beds with blankies, in the kitchen with the gate up. I am a terrible sleeper and wake too easily. I sleep with three full blast noise machines and Ambien. I won't lose sleep for anybody. Dogs don't like a cranky mommy.

What gorgeous dog!  I have a bichon and bichon/poodle mix and they both sleep on the bed.  I wouldn't have it any other way.  And for such little dogs (compared to yours) they sure know how to hog the bed!

Labs and Goldens...gotta love them...after the first 3 years!  We had a Golden (Candy) that was wonderful.  When we had to let her go, I swore that we were not going to get a breed that could clear off a coffee table with one sweep of their tail.  We got 2 (we never have just one dog) English Springer Spaniels and they have been terrific! They are limited to the family room or kitchen. HOWEVER, contrary to every other dog we have ever had, they end up on the couch with me every night!

Dogs are awesome. We used to let our black lab sleep lay by us for a little bit when we went to bed. But then she grew up and got big. Now she sleeps on the floor right next to the bed.

Paula, Springer Spaniels are a beautiful breed! I bet they can clear off a coffee table just as well as a Golden. I try to explain to guests if they have wine glasses, but they never believe me until it's too late!

We manage to keep ours off the couch, but Baxter jumps on your lap in the recliner with just his back paws on the floor. Even the top half of him is pretty heavy. He's 90 lbs total.

Linda, I have been there and done that with cats on the bed! I had a Tabbie with claws that would attack my feet when I moved them ... not fun. My Siamese would just squeak if I rolled on her for a second.

My Sheltie, Sundance, pretty well has the run of the house but rarely sleeps on the bed. His pet bed is at the foot of the bed, but he sleeps a bunch of different places -- on his bed, on the side of the bed, on the couch, or on the tile entryway in the living room. For all that he's given me over the years, I think he's earned that privelege.

My dog loves to sleep on the bed when we are gone during the day.  I'll come home and walk in the bedroom and the covers will be all messed up and the pillows are thrown off the bed.

Lara, I had to confess, GUILTY!!  We have an 8 year old lab who has just recently quit getting on the bed but I think it is because it is getting too hard for her to get up there.  She use to bark at the UPS man from the bed.

9:48pm • #14

Lara- My Chloey sleeps in our bed when it is thundering outside, which is ok because she gets scared. Other than that, unless Ashlee calls her up she sleeps in her own bed. Yeah shes spoiled, she has a custom bed me and her grandpa made out of Maple, with a doggy mattress and 2 layers of orthopedic foam, nothing but the best and most comfortable for my child :-D

I love your goldens they are so cute, can't say I blame you for letting them sleep in the bed :-D

Lara, Of course my dog sleeps on my bed, under the covers!  Unfortunately, the bed (queen size) came before the dog, so there are many nights that I hang at the edge of the bed!  I don't think a bigger bed would matter anyway because she has to be smashed up against somebody all the time!

5:55pm • #31

LAra- I do definitly love my dog :-D Ohhh she can definitly do bad, like go in the pond so much that installing one of those invisible fences was cheaper to install (we fenced in about 3 acres for her) than a years supply of dog shampoo lol Ashlee was kind of mad at me for bringing her home....a neighbor of one of my clients had a litter and they were going to take the pups to the human society so I asked if they wanted to sell one to me, they said take your pick you can have it, so I took Chloey and my dad took her sister Princess we didn't call to make sure it was ok just brought them home.... but its ok because Ashlee and my mom fell in love with the girls :-D They hang out alot together, and my fiancees parents have 2 dogs too, but Ashlee already told me whenever we do move I can get another dog to keep Chloey company (I want a blue pitbull lol). J/W are there any dog parks down there in TX where they could meet new friends? :-D

Hi,

Yes I do have a bed partner he is a English bulldog Bruno. Bruno can snore with the best of them lets say he gets kicked several times a night. And if anyone has a bulldog you know how loud they snore.

Chris, that would be a whole lot of dog shampoo! At least yours has short hair and dries quickly. Ours take forever to dry. If they had a pond, they would live in it like bull frogs! They would only come home to eat. There are lots of dog parks here. We have good weather (no snow) so we can use them all year. Texans like their dogs! Goes with the pick up truck :-)

Tinker, Bruno probably sounds like he's snoring just when he's breathing. I can only imagine how loud he must get! Maybe it's really you snoring and you're blaming poor Bruno!

7:20pm • #36

Lara- Yeah the dog shampoo we use is $10 for a tiny little amount (it would last about a week on Chloey with daily baths lol), but it smells great, not that that matters much since we have doggy perfume for her too lol The no snow thing would be kind of weird at first, I can't remember the last Christmas without snow lol The dog parks thing sounds cool, unfortunately we don't have any around here and alot of the parks ban animals here :-( Chloey would love that though she loves meeting new people and dogs.... Do Texans love pitbulls (they are my favorite breed lol), I've already got the truck (just a small F- 150, well small compared to them big texan farmers trucks I am sure) :-D

Chris, you've got the truck and I've got the little red convertible. maybe we could work out a time share. I think most people here like all breeds. I think that pitts get a bad reputation from jerks who fight them. I really like boxers too because they seem so smart. I have to laugh that Chloey's sister is a pitt/boxer mix named Princess. Isn't that like a doberman named Tinkerbell? Just playing ...

Pat, Bubby sounds like a cuddle bug. I recognize that "listen to me" persistent whine!

Jody, what a great picture! What are their names? They totally rule that bed! Don't let them talk to my dogs because pillows and blankets are not part of their deal. Although, I have caught them on my pillow once I'm up. As long as it's the "good end" on the pillow, then I am okay with it!

9:41pm • #42

Lara,  That would be Nicky on top of the pillows and Squirt peeking out from behind. Tons of fun, I wouldnt know what to do without my buddies along for the ride!

9:49pm • #44

LAra- I don't think we could do that, during the summer I need my truck for work. Unfortunately (well for driving a convertible) I have lawns I bag and put the grass clippings in the bed of the truck, dirt, and other landscaping goods as well, I don't think you would appreciate that lol. And wheres the joy in driving a convertible during the winter (up here anyways where it snows??) lol

Yeah Pits do have a bad rep from idiots, however the media doesn't help as many of the human attacks reported as being pitbulls are not actually pitbulls (it takes alot to actually turn a pit against a human and they don't even make good guard dogs). Pits and Boxers are both really smart, and beautiful :-D Speaking of dog names that don't fit.... One of my cousins actually had a 195 lb (at 9 months old) Rottweiler names Buddy, and its nickname was tiny (because he was actually the runt of the litter) LOL

10:15pm • #45

Oh my goodness, even with a king-sized bed, there is no way the Fuzzy-butt is sleeping with us!!! A full size, very long haired GSD is just too much. Besides, with a satin bedspread, he'd go sliding right off!!! Nope, the place for him is in the kitchen, in his "cave". Helps to keep him "in his place" so to speak. Only alpha pack members get to be on furniture and such. He loves his cave and goes running for it when it's "time for bed".

My dogs and cats have always been allowed to sleep on the bed. Cats, however, cannot sleep in cabinets where dishes are stored.

Zoey the cool cat

Nor are they allowed on the piano, on the dining table, on the kitchen countertop, or on the top of the refrigerator since they have to make an intermediate stop on the kitchen countertop.

Dogs are so much easier. Tell me again why I have cats.

I was laughing while reading this because your scenario is almost exactly the same as my scenario.  Our baby boy Brodie was the same as Baxter.  I usually won't let him in bed while I'm trying to go to sleep, but he just waits until we are asleep and then gets in bed with us anyway.  Ali doesn't really like to be touched while she is sleeping, but will crawl in sometimes early in the morning.  On top of all this, we have a queen, not a king!  And Ali and Brodie weigh about 75 lbs each.

We've got a three rat terriers (terrorists!) that sleep in their crate. However, we have huge black lab / pitt mix that must start the night out in the bed. No matter how hot or crowded, he's sleeps about 2 hours in the bed, then spends the rest of the night on the cool hardwood floor. Sometimes I want to jump down there too...especially when we had no power for days after Gustav!

nope, cats are allowed, but the lab and the great dane would put us out of even our king size bed.

It's not a question of do the dogs sleep on the bed, it's more like, do the dogs sleep IN the bed?

We've got two beagles - 9 and 2 years old.  The oldest one had full control of the bed until the puppy learned how to climb.  Then, being the ever patient and docile creature that he is, he gave up the bed for the snuggle ball and let the puppy have at it.  This has existed for most of the last two years.  The puppy (now 2) just won't let the older one on the bed.  It's funny, the moment she (the puppy) gets up to go out to pee at 6 am, he jumps in on the bed to sleep until 7:30 when breakfast is ready.

Then, a miracle happened !  My wife and I were out of town on vacation and the house sitter had to go away for the labor day weekend.  So she took them for boarding at the vet for a few days.  To save money she told the vet to board the dogs in the same cage ! (this is the puppy from hell, mind you who never lets the older one rest for 5 seconds).  Well, we got back home last week and what did we find?

Firstly, both dogs' ears were intact (beagles have big ears which get in the way during fights).  Secondly, we found that the dogs were calm and docile - nothing like the way they used to behave.  We thought that maybe the dogs shaped up thinking that we had abondoned them and that they needed to be on their best behavior for a new owner...who knows?  But the best part of this story is that the puppy jumped up on the bed that first night we were back and suddenly the older one also jumped up on the bed.  Instead of attacking the intruder, th puppy sniffed him, sat right next to him and then curled up near his tummy.  I couldn't believe my eyes!

The dogs still go into "royal rumpus" mode every night at 10pm, but I can't tell you how much of a joy it is to see them together on the bed, sleeping peacefully.  Now if they would only leave room for both me and my wife to cuddle together....

Martin. what a funny story. Maybe they bonded as a pack when their human family wasn't around. Our boys are constantly together and they have the same "royal rumpas" every night too. It must be a dog thing!

I hug to one side, my husband hugs the other side and kramer lays on his back with all legs spread wide.  I guess the answer to your question is do we get to sleep in the bed?

Actually we purchased a new bed and since our 6 yr. old Lab/German Shorthair had his knee operated on, it made it difficult for him to get up on the bed.  This forced us to take the mattresses off and put them on the floor to make it easier for him to get a good nights rest.

Here he is enjoying a ride with his head out of the sunroof...life's simple pleasures is what it's all about. He is so cool! I wish I had half the heart & soul that he has!  We definitely love that boy!

We had to go and get a king size bed so that there would be room for the three of us.  Lately I have been trying to decide if it would seem strange to add a twin size bed next to the king as the Irish Setter won't share!!

These dogs and stories are soooooo cute.  I too have a Bichon and a lab.  the bichon has slept on the bed from day one...is there a bichon out there that doesn't?  the lab sleeps on a pillow next to the bed on my side while the bichon, Katie lays just as close to me as possible.  This all worked out great as the bichon and lab will lay still until I'm ready to get up!  katie will lay in the bed all day if I do.  Great dogs.

Diana, what a cool picture! You should post it on some of the photography groups here with an explanation. It looks really artistic.

Kramer sounds like a very well loved boy! It's nice of him to share the bed with you :-)

Jerri, I wonder how many buying decisions are driven by dogs? It sounds like they sell a lot of mattresses!

Linda, they sound like great dogs. I agree, some of these stories are really cute. I think my dos would saty in bed all day until it was time for food.

Now I don't feel like such a sucker for letting them sleep on the bed!

Actually I think the question is "do you sleep in your dogs bed".
