There are four counties that make up Western Massachusetts: Hampden County, Hampshire County, Franklin County and Berkshire County. Springfield is the largest city in Western Massachusetts and is a city of many firsts. Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in Springfield and it is home to the Basketball Hall of Fame. The first gasoline powered car was produced in Springfield in 1892 and in 1901 the first American motorcycle company, Indian Motorcycle was founded there.
